I’ve never seen this cafe before…it’s so hidden! The only reason I found out about this cafe was from the freezine KLIP which usually has coupons for local cafe, restaurants and services such as salons and language schools (as this magazine is geared toward students and working visas from Japan – but English version is also available).
The cafe is located in the trendy, unique Gastown. It has two levels with red brick walls that give it that hip, retro style. The ground level looked a bit more modern and decorated with consideration into layout and design. The staff were very friendly and patient in explaining how their cafe worked. There were containers of different tea flavours that you could see and smell. So many choices! Can’t decide!
I thought that the cafe was originally called Après-Midi Teahouse, and had changed to The Gastown Tea Company – which I remember the ad in KLIP to be called by. I thought that I recall their website announcing the change, but at the time of this posting, I could no longer find the website, and Urbanspoon still lists it as Après-Midi Teahouse. So maybe I had the old name and new name mixed up?
Cute stylish cafe
We sat upstairs even though I wanted to sit on the main floor, but it was all occupied. One friend ordered a high-tea with sandwiches and desserts. Very cute! The ones I did try were really good – especially the cream and the jams…
Small upstairs seating area
I love cafes where they actually serve their drinks in real mugs or cups with saucers. Having a tea pot if you ordered tea is a plus. I’m not a fast drinker, so having most of the tea inside the tea pot keeps it warmer, and it’s just nice being able to pour as much, or little into your cup.
So the next time you’re in Gastown, check out this unique cafe – if you can find it!
