Axis Hair Salon

I had bought a voucher deal from Social Shopper for a $39 for Shampoo, Scalp Massage, Axis Professional Deep Heated Conditioning Treatment, Haircut, Blowout and Style, Plus a Bottle of AXIS mor & $10 Gift Certificate at Axis Hair Salon (Value $100)

Apparently, the old vintage looking location on Georgia had closed down and there is only now the one on Pender. It’s a super funky salon, square pyramid mirrors, interesting layout, and lots of natural light with all glass windows on one side.

My hair stylist was Steve, a really friendly guy. The scalp massage was really nice. Ah~. The conditioning treatment helped my frizzy, wavy uncontrollable hair more manageable. He did (as often other stylists I find) scrap my scalp too hard when pinning my hair up to keep them up from falling. I wish stylists would be more gentle! Do not jab those metal clips into my scalp! Steve spent just about an hour for everything. I got an inch off my hair. Although I like my bangs long, I find that every stylist will end up cutting it too short…even if I tell them not to. It’s probably because my hair tends to curl, so it looks shorter when dry…

I received a bottle of oil treatment – it smells like Vanilla – OMG it’s so good! I will have to go back to get some more of this once I run out…you massage a dab of it after you’ve toweled dry your hair after washing. Keeps it not only smelling nice, but down especially if you have dry brittle hair. On their website, it says it’s $30. It doesn’t indicate how many ml…but I’m guessing it’s the same size as the one I received, which is 120ml. It’s in a glass bottle with a pump, so after use, you can wash it out and use it for something else – like for shampoo for soap dispenser.

I was suppose to get the $10 gift certificate to use for next time. They took my email address so they can send it in. It’s been about a few months, and I still haven’t received anything. Ok, so I’m in no rush to get a haircut at this point, but it would be nice. Ok, so I guess I’m a little lazy in not asking them about it…but hey, where’s the service if they can’t do it properly.

Steve gave me 3 cards that give first-time customers 10% that come and see Steve. Not sure if I can use this…I guess not, since I would no longer be a first-time customer.

Overall, the service was good. Steve brought me water while I was waiting for the deep conditioning to set in. We didn’t talk much, but I prefer it that way – not those chit chat people that tells their life away with their stylist. My friend is like that. I think he only goes to rant – almost like seeing a counselor, lol.

For payment,  there was the $2 tax and $1 environmental fee, and of course, the tip. Don’t forget just because you’re using a voucher.

Mobil 1 Lube Express in Richmond

So a friend of mine gave me a voucher – $19 for premium oil change and 25 point inspection (a $78 value). It’s a long No.3 road in Richmond, right across from Landsdowne Station. With a very small entrance, it’s easy to miss. I’m glad that I had familiarized myself with Google street view to see what was around it so I knew what the area would look like. Also, there was a guy waving a sign to the oncoming traffic. Wah…must be hot with the summer sun blazing down onto him…

The guy who greeted me was friendly, he told me to park behind a vehicle that was being serviced and said that it would be about a 15 minute wait. I was already happy to come to Mobil instead of Autobot – another voucher for oil change that I had bought. The one guy was friendly, and no appointment was necessary. Last year with Autobot, I needed to drop it off and take the skytrain home, and do the same to come pick up. This year, when I called in to make an appointment, they said that since I was only able to come in on Saturday, my appointment would be 4 weeks away! With Mobil 1 Lube Express, it was serviced right away, and could drive off with a repaired car. How convenient!

The guy doing my service was really hard to understand. He had a higher voice, and talked fast – perhaps unclear. I was also nervous because when it came to cars, I didn’t know much. I know how to check my oil level, fill it up, add coolants and fill gas, but that was about it. I stumbled whenever a question was asked about the car.

As he inspected, the bill grew bigger and bigger. I needed to replace my transmission, flush out my oil, this and that, coming to a total of $210. Because I don’t know much about cars, I can’t say if I’m being scammed or something. But the staff did show me the parts and explained why it needed changing or renewing. But most auto repair places have been good. And when 2 places tell you the same thing (not like you need to change your oil, or something generic), but the same specific problems, then you know you have a problem that needs fixing.

I drive my car to work and back 5 days a week, so I figured $210 was reasonable, and it’s just good to know that the car is in good working condition, especially since the car was already 16 years old, and for the first decade, it was never routinely checked or serviced.

Perhaps the guy could sense my unwillingness to pay $210…he suggested that I keep the receipt with all the details on what was done to the car, so that if I do bring the car back, or take it elsewhere and they say that I need another transmission change, I can prove to them that it was already done recently.

Because I had a bit more replacing and cleaning to do, it took longer than other people, but still around 30-40 minutes. Not bad. I rather wait for that amount of time than be without the use of a car.

Unfortunately, I can’t return the Autobot voucher…but it will be the last time, since now that I know about Mobil, I’m certainly going back again to Mobil :)

Idea Rabbit Business Cards from Jukebox Print

It’s heeeeeeeeeeeeere!!! Idea Rabbit business cards!! Hurray! Jukebox Print recently had a promo for 250 for only $22!! I couldn’t resist the bargain, and I also wanted to know how my cards would turn out. I have used them through a company I worked at before, but nothing for my own projects.

The promo was for $22 (originally around $100?)
-250 business cards at standard size 3.5″x2″
-colour on both sides
-with bleeds
-on 20 pt cardstock
-silk matte laminate finish
-digital printing
-3 to 4 day turnaround

I didn’t want to pay for shipping so I decided to go pick up myself from their office in Gastown. It was my first time going to their office. It was in a run-down building, but as soon as I opened the door on the second floor, it was like another dimension, with colourful walls that corresponds with their brand identity. They are open Monday to Friday 9-5, and Saturdays 9am-12:30pm. Since I work during weekdays, it was nice to have the option of going in on the weekend.

At the entrance of Jukebox Print

There was a young lady behind two large Mac computers at the reception desk. She took my printed order number and went in the back to find my order. Exciting!!! I anxiously waited as I looked at their samples on their window sills. Once she came back with my order, she asked me if I wanted to check them. I opened the box and viola! 250 of Idea Rabbit cards! :D I was a bit worried if 20pt would be thick enough, but it was pretty sturdy and a good thickness. The colour seemed saturated, which made the printed images stand out even more. Even though it was digitally printed and not on a press, the images were clear and crisp. What I loved the most was the texture!! It was this velvety, smooth fuzzy surface. It felt unique, and you just want to keep rubbing it LOL.

Once I started handing them out to people, they were impressed by the price and quality, but the number one thing they mentioned was the feel of the surface.

I asked the receptionist if she had the free Recycled sample pack that is advertised online, but she said you have to go online to order it. Bummer…it would save them postage $…and I could get it right away…oh well. Not a big problem.

Now it says 3 to 4 days turnaround, but for me, from the time I ordered to when I received the email that it was ready for pick up was 12 days. So if you’re looking for a rush, this may be a problem…though I vaguely remember in the order process that you may be able to indicate when you wanted the order to be done by (not sure if there is extra cost to this). Since I was in no hurry, I didn’t indicate any deadlines.

Since I was at the Jukebox office, I picked up some of their printed samples of work – impressive and unique!

I SOOOO happy I got them done at Jukebox Print. Their online chat system is a huge bonus since I always have a lot of questions for different projects and they are always very helpful. They are constantly adding new stock and unique feature for whatever creative project you may have.

Love you Jukebox Print!
