Boston Pizza at Metrotown

Boston Pizza Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoWe had about 15 people and we reserved only when a bunch of us after a big BBQ decided to eat more (I guess we didn’t have enough!), at Boston, and called in 20 minutes before arriving, but they were able to accommodate us.

Most people wanted a drink, rather than binge eat, and for some like myself who didn’t drink, their extensive selection made it a good choice.idearabbit_bostonpizza_metrotown1 idearabbit_bostonpizza_metrotown2

idearabbit_bostonpizza_metrotown3Sheepie ordered the Mediterranean Salad $7.49 with garden greens, cucumbers, red onions, red peppers, tomatoes, feta and Kalamata olives topped with tomato tarragon dressing. It looked pretty tasty.

I ordered the Boston Pizza’s House Salad $6.99 with garden greens, red peppers, red onions, carrot ribbons, julienned beets in their citrus vinaigrette dressing. Being it their ‘house salad’, I was a bit disappointed in seeing that Sheepie’s Mediterranean seemed fancier. However, it was an alright salad.

idearabbit_bostonpizza_metrotown5 People at the table ordered Cheesesteak Cactus Cut Nachos $14.99 which we had a few bites of. It was tasty and addictive! Smoked Applewood seasoned Cactus Cut chips covered in mozzarella, cheddar, sliced BBQ steak, red peppers and red onions drizzled with horseradish mayo and green onions. Served with salsa and our signature cactus dip. As this is best served right out of the kitchen, it is not available for take-out. People who were more interested in drinking sitting on the other end of the table ordered the BP’s Fully Loaded Nachos (Serves 3-5) $18.99. For the size and just $3 more than the Cheesesteak Cactus Cut Nachos, this is a better deal! It’s got chili lime dusted tortilla chips, pizza mozzarella, cheddar, nacho cheese sauce, banana peppers, tomatoes, red onions and a cilantro lime lettuce mix. Topped with your choice of chorizo sausage, seasoned beef, BBQ chicken or spicy chicken. Comes with salsa and sour cream. Again, this is not available for take-out.

Service was great. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, but not sports-bar rowdy. Great place for large groups!

Village Taphouse

Village Taphouse Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato I was attracted to the light tower structure and the romantically lit string of lights in their patio along with the fake, but nice candles flickering on each table.
If you are a sports lover and want to see the game, this place is perfect as they have many large screens.
The atmosphere is lively, and the staff are super nice.
We waited a few minutes as they cleared one of the tables for us.

idearabbit-taphouse5idearabbit-taphouse6I ordered the Sea Chowder $12, while Sheepie ordered the Baja Fish Taco $13.25. The fish taco was under the ‘Handhelds’ section which if you look at the menu, right underneath this heading, it says in red fonts ‘are served with house-cut fries…’, so we assumed that the dish came with fries. I did think it was odd that is said to add fries to the tacos, it was $4. I only ordered the soup so I could munch on the fries.
idearabbit-taphouse idearabbit-taphouse2When the dish arrived, we were surprised and we talked to our server. She said that the taco was an ‘appetizer’, so it did not come with fries. We re-examined the menu together and the server agreed that it was confusing that it was under the main section called ‘Handhelds’ with the added sides. However, the red copy did say ‘BURGERS AND SANDWICHES are served with house-cut fries…’ so tacos are not burger and sandwiches.
After she left and another staff came by, we asked for the fries. We got our fries, and our server told us that the confusion sometimes happen, and it’s understandable, so they would have it on the house. Nice! But really, I think the layout of the menu needs to be redone.

When we looked at the receipt, the fries were $8 – so the appetizer portion of the House-cut Kennebec Fries with truffle lemon aioli and parmesan. It was really delicious. The presentation in a metal bucket was different. Not sure why didn’t get the $4 ‘side version’ to the taco, but then again, the fries was mentioned to another staff, so I guess he didn’t know. However, no complaint as it was complimentary either way.

The New England Style Chowder had plenty of seafood, including chunks of smoked salmon, with side garlic toasts. It was light and not super creamy – in a good way. The flavour was rich and I could see myself eating 2 bowls. LOL. Sheepie, a lover of chowder soup, had a few spoonfuls, and he thought it was pretty good.

The tacos were beer-battered local cod, fire roasted salsa, chipotle aioli, with cabbage, and pickled red onions. I only had a bite of the deep fried fish, but it tasted pretty good.
It was great to have such great service. I enjoyed the food, nice presentation and great atmosphere – not super loud but alive and energetic.
I would definitely come back.

The Denman Tap House

The Denman Tap House Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoFor Halloween night, Sheepie was invited by some friends to the pub on Denman. I’m a quiet, soft spoken yogi (lol), so it’s not quite the scene where I usually would go to. The entrance fee was $5 per person, though the guy after us was charge $10 for some reason. Inside, the music was blasting with a small dance floor, the bar and dining area. The place was decorated with a spooky but fun Halloween flair, and all the servers were dressed up. I’m pretty sure if I were to return, I wouldn’t know who was which server.

idearabbit-denmantaphouse idearabbit-denmantaphouse2We arrived around around 9pm. The place was half empty. It was extremely difficult to understand our server who spoke at such a low frequency in the midst of the loud atmosphere. Sheepie ordered a glass of beer $3.50 (special that day) along with 6 Layer Dip and Chicken Fingers & Fries. I don’t drink, so nothing for me.

idearabbit-denmantaphouse3The food didn’t arrive for nearly 40 minutes. When we asked our server, she said there were a lot of orders, even though the place wasn’t all that busy yet. Sheepie wanted to take a photo of her scary costume, but she mumbled something and walked away. When she brought Sheepie’s beer, he asked again, and again, she mumbled something and walked away. Was she just playing her costume role as a dead funky skeleton? She was so rude…

idearabbit-denmantaphouse4The 6 Layer Dip $9.95 had guacamole, re-fried beans, sour cream, salsa, chipotle, alioli and cheese with Nacho chips. The bowl had everything all in one (hence the name), but it was just a mix of everything, and not a food you could ‘savour’, though I guess at these kinds of places, that’s not your main concern.

idearabbit-denmantaphouse5Chicken Fingers & Fries $8.95. The fries looked good, but they were soooo salty. It came with Honey Mustard and Ketchup, but the salt was too much already. I didn’t have much of it. The chicken was crispy.

As it got closer to 10:30pm, the place started to get packed. Soon, it was impossible to walk around. I heard some glass shattering. I left around 11:30pm as I needed to get up 6am the next day.
Perhaps it’s not the best time to evaluate the restaurant. I’m not sure how crazy it gets on a normal night. I hate loud music and having to shout and guess what the other person is saying for a conversation, and from some of the reviews that I had read, it seems that that’s the case normally. Plus, like I said, I don’t drink, so pubs/bars aren’t my venues. Poor food and terrible service.
Later, when I was writing this post and checking my receipt, I was shocked to see that there was already a 15% gratuity added on the bill. It was only 2 of us! So we had paid double the tip to her for bad service! ARGH! And she just stood there as we searched our wallets for cash, never saying anything that it was added. Terrible greedy waitress! Never return!
