Thai Eleven on Granville Island

Thai Eleven on UrbanspoonWe were pressed for time to see a play at the Arts Club, so we went to the food court to grab something quick. I went to Thai Eleven and got a 2 item for $6.99. The to-go container is somewhat small for the price. The staff are angry (or just seems to be angry) Chinese that aren’t friendly at all. I asked for the Pad Thai and one chicken skewer. The noodles were dry and bland, so the juice from the chicken helped. The chicken was flavourful and juicy. However, I would not ever return if it were not on Granville Island. It’s a lot more expensive than getting something similar (for fast food) in other mall food courts, but I guess the rent there must be pretty pricey. Despite the cost and taste, it was super busy on a nice Saturday afternoon.

Would not return.

The Noodle Box

Noodlebox on UrbanspoonFor the fast-food type restaurant/atmosphere, the noodles here are quite overpriced. We actually had walked in before in Kits, and walked out because of the price, but since we hadn’t given it a chance, we decided it was time.

The restaurant seems to be falling apart with leaky roofs and a door that doesn’t close properly. There were cold drafts that didn’t make us happy.

idearabbit-noodlebox idearabbit-noodlebox2 idearabbit-noodlebox3I ordered Pad Thai $13 and Sheepie had the Thai Style Chow Mein. I had mine without peanuts, but had all the rest; egg, garlic, ginger, onions, sprouts, peppers, carrots, cabbage and herbs. Oddly, both our bowl looked pretty much the same. It seemed there were more sprouts than noodles…

As we ate, we saw the guy who ordered way before us impatiently waited for his to-go order. We weren’t sure what he ordered, but it was definitely taking a long time.

The cashier/order taker was very friendly, though the rest of the hipster-chefs seemed a bit grungy. There was a pot with ready-made tea, unfortunately, it was pretty close to being empty so I only got half a cup and the staff seemed too busy (or careless) to refill it.

The food was alright, but not worth what we paid. We wont be returning.

Five Guys

Five Guys Burgers & Fries on Urbanspoon

nut_allery_allery_icon_smallAs Sheepie and I walked into the restaurant, I saw boxes of peanuts (in their shells) with scoopers and little paper bowls. Sheepie asked if it was just on for display or they were for sale, and the staff kindly told us that they were complimentary. Woo hoo for those that love peanuts, but boo hoo for those with peanut allergy! If you are severely allergic, it’s best to stay away from this restaurant! We were also informed that all the fries were deep fried in peanut oil, so no fries for me :(

idearabbit-fiveguys7idearabbit-fiveguys idearabbit-fiveguys2I wasn’t all too hungry anyways, so Sheepie ended up just getting a Little Cheeseburger $6+ and a drink which came to a whopping $9+ with taxes. You are allowed to choose different toppings so your burger is customizable.

The food took forever for a fast food looking place. The wait seemed more like at a sit-down restaurant, but we waited by the counter for the burger. Definitely not a place if you want something on a rush. The interior is retro and distinctive with their red and white tiles, and 1980s music playing in the background.

idearabbit-fiveguys5 idearabbit-fiveguys6The burger is definitely bigger than your cheeseburger at McDonald’s, but since it was the Little Cheeseburger, the patty was only half the size, leaving Sheepie to eat half the burger with only the bread and veggies. The entire burger seemed soggy and deformed compared to other burgers which can keep their shape till the end.

I took a bite, but nothing extraordinary. I was expecting a nice charcoal-ed meat, but it wasn’t that strong. Sheepie didn’t mind.

The drink stations seemed like it could really use some repairs. Both stations were not functioning properly :( So much for free refills. idearabbit-fiveguys3idearabbit-fiveguys4

I myself wouldn’t return, only because there’s peanuts everywhere! I’m not severely allergic (like can’t breath in air with peanuts), but I’d like to stay away if I can. Sorry Five Guys. Plus, the burger didn’t wow me, and for about the same price for a regular sized burger, I’d rather eat it at a sit down restaurant like Red Robins or White Spot which is much tastier.
