Sushi Sushi

Sushi Sushi Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoWe had originally gone to Hitoe Sushi, but were shooed away when they didn’t have any room, and the rest were reserved. We went to our popular Green Leaf Sushi, but was also turned away when we didn’t have reservations, and it was completely full.

We began driving around, and thought of trying out Sushi Sushi. Over the years of trying sushi all over town, we had both started to avoid the ‘cheaper’ sushi restaurants just because it usually ended up being a bit of disappointment, and maybe even a waste of money. idearabbit_sushisushi1

Will Sushi Sushi, run by Koreans live up to our expectations that has slowly risen? idearabbit_sushisushi6First, going into a restaurant where there are dirty dishes laying on the table isn’t a good sign. Sure, if they’ve just left, but if it looks like it’s been sitting there… even if they are short staffed, a yellow flag goes up.

Yes, I do have a slight pet peeve about plastic plates. I don’t use plastic – even for Tupperware (were all replaced by glass). I don’t have fancy china or anything. You can get decent looking stuff at the dollar store if you know which to buy for very little money. I wasn’t too thrilled with the unnaturally blue plate. Luckily, food was prepared on porcelain. But I’m getting pretty picky… but if I don’t serve and eat on plastic at home, why spend more money to be fed on one?idearabbit_sushisushi7

We had the Sushi Sushi Special Combo for $12.95. You got to pick one dish from section A, B and C, totaling three different dishes, so we picked the Agedashi Tofu, Salmon roll, and TNT roll. The agedashi tofu’s fried flour needed at least another 20-30 seconds in the fryer. It was all soft, though it wasn’t a really bad thing.

idearabbit_sushisushi2The salmon in the Salmon roll was a bit too big…yes, bigger isn’t always better, especially hard salmon. The TNT had prawn tempura, cucumber, avocado and tuna on top with tempura crumbs and special sauce. I had one piece, but it tasted like any other special roll of any kind. I often don’t order these special rolls myself because I tend to find that they all taste the same. Too many ingredients are thrown in, with the same sauce, resulting in a all-the-same flavour. It was alright.

Oddly, the plate did not come with wasabi nor gari (ginger), though I did have enough for him from my plate. The soy sauce bottle was sticky. Service can be at slow at times…though it’s understandable as there is only one lady on the floor. idearabbit_sushisushi3I ordered the Salmon & Avocado $4.50 was priced average, but was turned off by the brown avocados. The salmon was rubbery and hard.

Their tea however, was green and pretty good.

The hallway down to the facility was unpleasant. Boxes and stuff stacked up. It looked filthy. Bathroom looked run down. I would rather use my own bathroom any day.

Will I be back? No.

Subway on Broadway and Fir

Click to add a blog post for Subway on ZomatoSo we were at the International Night Market and Subway had a stand there giving out free coupons. Ok, so not completely free as you had to spin the wheel and do some sort of exercise. I had to do 10 jumping jacks for a free salad. No complaints :)

I went to get my free salad for my lunch. None of the staff knew about the promotion. (this was not surprising since the other 2 Subways did not accept the voucher or know about it either). The supervisor on site asked where I had got it. After the salad was made, he was trying to make the salad ‘free’ in the POS system. But since he couldn’t, and the lineup was getting longer and longer behind me, he told me to pay now, and come back the next day when the manager returns, in which then he would be able to give me a full refund.

I had felt bad on taking just a free salad, so I had also ordered soup, but then I felt a bit annoyed that I had to come back. Sure, it’s free in the end, but why the heck would Subway hand out coupons that no store knew about? When I recall the days back at working in Burger King and McDonald’s, I remember our supervisors telling us of new promotions and such each time they came out. So for managers to not know what’s going on, leaves me the impression that Subway doesn’t have good communication between the headquarters and the franchisees.

idearabbit-subway_broadway_fir2 idearabbit-subway_broadway_fir4 idearabbit-subway_broadway_fir3Onto the salad itself. I asked for everything, except the hot peppers, and added chicken. The Chicken Strip Salad was $7.25. To get such a large salad for free was awesome. However, I don’t think I’d pay the full price for the quality. I think McDonald’s salads are better. The lettuces were brown, and pink-reddish on the edges – indicating they’ve been cut a day or two before and wasn’t all too fresh.

The Potato soup $2.69 was creamy and quite tasty. A bit on the salty side, but still good.

When I returned, the Chinese or Korean manager had a bit of an attitude. When I tried to explain sometimes, he would cut me saying “Just a minute, just a minute” in a bit of an arrogant way. I felt like I had brought a fraud coupon and was trying to justify for my refund.

I and Sheepie used to go to Subway all the time. The $5 foot-long sandwich deals were a steal. Unfortunately, they got rid of them, and now offer a type of foot-long sandwich for $6.50, different for each day of the week. It’s still a good deal though. However, I didn’t see this offered at this location, so I wonder if it’s only the one in downtown on Davie that does it…not sure…

I reduced the number of times of going to Subway after hearing about the materials used in yoga mats and shoes in their bread. Ok, so they’ve taken it out they say, but then what else could be in their other food?

Momo Sushi House on Bidwell

Mo Mo Sushi House on Urbanspoon

This is the smallest Momo Sushi location – all run by Koreans. It’s an easy to miss sushi-ya, almost hidden on Bidwell St.  Some prices seem to be even cheaper than the other two. There are only about 10-12 seats inside, and a table for about 4 outside during the summer, so not good for large groups. It’s usually full with some waiting for take outs.

The price is really inexpensive – $6 for bento box. Service is prompt and friendly. Water or tea is self-serve.When we dine in, we will usually get a small soup that goes with the bento combos with 2-3 strings of udon in it. I find it a bit too salty and usually don’t end up drinking the whole thing.

It’s a good place if you want to get yourself filled up for really cheap. This is my least favourite location because it is the most run-down and feels super cramped. They did do a bit of renovation earlier this year though – however, it seemed like it was done themselves, so nothing spectacular in the changes.

I suggest doing take out if you live near by.

I had once instance where the spicy tuna looked off, and tasted bad. I shouldn’t have eaten them…I only had a roll and a bit of the three, but later on, I knew I shouldn’t have even touched it! BLAH~~~ also, that take out took forever…waited along time.

Months later, my friend also took out, again waiting for a long time. However, the percentage of long take outs versus quick ones are very low, so don’t think that it’s always slow. However, that time too, he also said the quality was really low.

Since then, I have avoided going to Momo – this one in particular since there are many other choices in the downtown area that are competitive in price and quality.
