idearabbit_spaghetei7idearabbit_spaghetei1I was kindly invited by for a complimentary dinner to Spaghetei. I has seen this Japanese restaurant when they opened and had been curious to try it out. Even though it’s a small restaurant that can be easily missed, I knew of it’s location since it was one of the many locations of Benkei Ramen before.

I was there on a Monday evening. A quiet atmosphere, great for chatting up with friends as I find it difficult if the music is blasting and there is a huge crowd crammed into a place. Clean and simple decor. Although small, the space is open and airy with the tables not crammed together.

idearabbit_spaghetei10The original location is in Aomori, Japan. They’ve been open since 1975, and still going strong! That really says about the food and service – people keep coming back!

This location on Robson is the only other one outside of Japan, so we are super lucky! They have kept most of the dishes the same, but have tweaked it a bit in consideration for the local ingredients used, and thinking about the different audience here in Vancouver.

As the restaurant name suggests, their specialty is pasta. Not any kind of pasta, but spaghetti. I LOVE pasta, so I was really looking forward to trying this place out. Also, it’s rare to have authentic ‘Japanese’ style pasta here in Vancouver, so I was pretty excited. What makes it Japanese? Well, there are some flavours that are not Italian. For example, the popular Neapolitan is a ketchup-based tomato sauce that doesn’t sit on top of the pasta, but is cooked and mixed together with veggies and meats. Mentaiko is also very Japanese. I don’t recall seeing this dish when I’ve been to Italy. But that can be said for many of the variety that Spaghetei serves.

idearabbit_spaghetei2We started off with their green Garlic Bread. Wow! The colour was so beautiful!! It kind of reminded me of good-quality matcha, so in my mind, I was kind of thinking the flavour could be like matcha, but that impression was quickly brushed off as I smelled the mouth-watering smell of garlic. Mmmm… Crunchy and crisp, not too oily.

idearabbit_spaghetei3Pork Chili Oil Bread ($4.60) comes with several small slices of bread, with a small bowl of boiling oil with chopped pork and eggplant. We were talking quite a bit, so it cooled down, but it was still hot – as in spicy! The pork was super tender. It was a bit difficult to eat with the pork and all of that oil on the bread, so we mixed it in with some of the pasta dishes.

All spaghetti dishes can be ordered in large, medium/regular or small.

idearabbit_spaghetei6Regular Clams $13 was the first one I tried. It’s not super oily, and subtle but rich in flavour. The addition of thinly sliced nori (dried seaweed) sprinkled on top is typical in non-saucy spaghetti dishes in Japan. The home-made ginger soy sauce was a pleasant change from the usual white wine used for clams in the traditional Italian dish of Vongole (clams). The bright red-orange tobiko (flying fish roe) was a nice accent and complemented the thinly chopped up green shiso (Japanese herb). This was my favourite one out of the three, despite thinking that I would have Mentaiko as my number one.

idearabbit_spaghetei4idearabbit_spaghetei8Regular Mentaiko $13 had mushrooms, juicy shrimps, nori (dried seaweed) and shiso. Subtle flavour again, but it feels almost healthy without any thick sauce. Could have used a bit of spices to give it a bit of kick, but easily goes down. Very delicious!

idearabbit_spaghetei5Small Barayaki is a unique and modern twist on spaghetti dishes. It has pan fried beef and onions with teriyaki like sauce which is apparently the traditional food of Aomori, Japan. They’ve combined it with spaghetti, and it takes great! What a great combination. My friend who accompanied me loved this one the most. I’m not a pork/meaty person, but the flavour was really good.

idearabbit_spaghetei9Next came the first dessert – Matcha Powder Snow. We stared at it in awe for some time – so pretty! The shaved ice looked like coconut or literally – snow scooped up from a serene, white, mystical winter. I was expecting not much from such a simple dessert. I didn’t know it was shaved milk, so I was expecting a strong matcha powder flavour with ice. But to my surprise, the texture, the way it subtly melted in my mouth and the sweet milky flavour blew me away. It was the first time that I had anything like this. I immediately fell in love! I can just remember it so clearly as I type this and now crave for more….ahh… I’ll definitely come back here if we’re in the neighbourhood and need a dessert.

idearabbit_spaghetei11For their second dessert, we had the Creme Brule. Unlike some other places where I’ve tried this dish, the crust was super thin, making it easy to crack and eat with the contrasting smooth pudding underneath. The crust wasn’t overbearing (in sweetness) nor sticky where it would get lodged onto to your molars if you chewed down on it. Overall, it wasn’t overly sweet (characteristic of Japanese desserts – which I love) with a raspberry and mint on top as bonus. Thumbs up.

The service was great and friendly – all smiling, prompt and professional. Definitely would like to return to try out more dishes – and the Powder Snow!

They have a weekday happy hour special from 11:30am to 2:30pm which offers the Double Meat Sauce, Mentaiko, Tomato Cream or Barayaki for only $9.80 and get additional discounts on your drink, salad and dessert!

For the Christmas Holidays (Dec 21sst-25th), they have a 5 course meal for only $42 for two ($21/person)

Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese Cheesecake

Click to add a blog post for Uncle Tetsu's Japanese Cheesecake on ZomatoMy roommate had just returned from Toronto, and as a souvenir, she had brought me back Uncle Tetsu’ cheesecake. I didn’t know that it was so popular, nor that such place existed. She said that she had to wait in line for nearly 1.5 hours!! Thank you roommate!

So with me having to skip the long line wait, plus the free delivery from TO, I opened the box to see a spongy cake with the Uncle Tetsu’s character baked on top. When I cut out a piece, I could see how soft it was. Now if you’re used to the ‘Western’ style of cheesecake that is dense and sweeter, you may not like the style and flavour.

idearabbit-uncletetsu3

Mmmmmmmmmmmm!! It just melts in your mouth! Like most Japanese sweets, it’s not that sweet. On the first evening, I ate half of the cheesecake – all by myself. I could have kept going, but I wanted to also share it with Sheepie, so I resisted my temptations, lol.

idearabbit-uncletetsu1 idearabbit-uncletetsu2If there was one in Vancouver, I’d definitely go and buy it for a special occasion. It doesn’t have to be a special day or anything as the 6″ cheesecake isn’t that overly expensive at $8.88 – which is probably another reason for the line ups.

I will check it out the next time I’m in Toronto – though I doubt I’d be patient enough to wait over an hour. I am also curious about the Uncles Tetsu’s Matcha cafe right next door. The matcha ice cream looks delicious too~

Momo Sushi on Robson

Click to add a blog post for Momo Sushi on ZomatoI was somewhat reluctant to go back to Momo after having not-so-pleasant experiences with the food quality at the other locations. But it opened up recently and still wanted to give it a chance, so off we went for dinner.

It’s a decent sized restaurant, about the same size as the one on Denman. Simple design, not much to say about the decor. The restaurant is busy with all tables occupied at all times we were there. It took the server quite a while before we had our orders taken but we kept ourselves amused by the numerous typos on the menu. The other locations always spelled ‘Negitoro’ as ‘Nigitoro’. But this place even spelled their own restaurant name wrong!! ‘Momo Shushi’.

I ordered Chicken Yakisoba and Sheepie had a special roll and avocado roll. We both got complimentary salads to start off with. Nothing different from the other Momo locations. The yakisoba was super greasy and the chicken was all fat and oil with the skin which I am not a fan of. I left most of it on the side. It’s always interesting to see traditional dishes being made by non-Japanese and left up to their interpretation on what yakisoba should have. This one had a slice of thin lemon in the middle and a mountain of gari (those pink ginger stuff that is suppose to come with sushi). But then again, Japan doesn’t even have California rolls – or most rolls that most of us has come accustomed to, so I guess it’s the way food changes as cultures merge. These additions (gari and lemon) to the yakisoba weren’t a bad thing. In fact, the gari is always nice to clear up one’s mouth, especially with the heavy sauce from the noodles.

The avocados in the avocado rolls were fresh and satisfactory.

Sheepie mentioned that the prices were slightly higher than the other Momo, but that could be because it is located on pricey Robson. I would not order the yakisoba again, so I will stick to their sushi next time – if I ever do go back again.

I am sorry to pick on Momo but after having two food poisoning experience from two different locations, I had to look this location’s inspection up:

Lack of/Inadequate Food Safety Plan (# of observations = 1)

Inadequate Cooling and/or Refrigerated Storage of Potentially Hazardous Food(s)
(# of observations = 1)

A large amount of potentially hazardous food was being stored at room temperature. Imitation crab and cucumber being stored on the counter both measured 16 degrees C. Salmon sashimi measured 8.5 degrees C. The sushi display cooler was too warm. Tuna in the display case measured 10.5 degrees C. This is unacceptable. Potentially hazardous foods such as fish, sauces, cucumbers, etc. must be kept refrigerated at 4 degrees C or colder at all times. These foods may not be stored on the counter without refrigeration – not even during busy lunch or dinner periods. Refrigeration temperatures must be monitored throughout the day. Results must be recorded in a logbook. Immediate corrective action is required.

Inadequate Cooling and/or Refrigerated Storage of Potentially Hazardous Food(s)
(# of observations = 1)

Two deep containers of cooked chicken were being stored on the counter. Staff were adding freshly cooked hot chicken to previously cooled chicken. It is imperative that cooked foods be cooled very quickly. Do NOT pile foods too high. Transfer the contents of tall containers to shallow containers. If possible, stir the foods frequently to release heat energy. Hasten cooling by placing foods in an ice or water bath, or by using an ice wand. Do not cover foods until they have cooled sufficiently to be placed in a refrigerator and do not add warm foods to previously cooled foods. Immediate corrective action is required.

Inadequate Hot Holding of Potentially Hazardous Food(s) (# of observations = 1)

Cooked tempura measured 31 degrees C. This is not acceptable. Cooked foods must be maintained at 60 degrees C or hotter, or they must be cooled quickly and refrigerated at 4 degrees C or colder. Immediate corrective action is required.

Improper Cleaning, Sanitizing of Equipment and Utensils (# of observations = 3)

The rice scoop was being stored in a container of water at room temperature. This is not a safe food handling practice. Rice scoops and other utensils must be cleaned and sanitized after use or they must be stored in a manner that precludes bacterial growth – either at 4 degrees C or colder or at 60 degrees or hotter. Immediate corrective action is required. A cutting board was being stored so that its side was in direct contact with the floor. Many of the cutting boards were discolored. All cutting boards must be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Subsequently they must be stored in a manner and location where they are protected from contamination. Cutting boards that have deep cuts that cannot be properly cleaned and sanitized must be replaced. Immediate corrective action is required.

Lack of/Inadequate Sanitation Plan (# of observations = 1)

Improper Construction/Maintenance/Sanitation of Establishment (# of observations = 7)

General sanitation in this establishment is poor and must be improved. All walls, shelves, cupboards and equipment must be thoroughly cleaned. The floor must be scrubbed clean. Special attention must be paid to areas that are hard-to-reach or dark, such as under, behind and between equipment and along walls. Curtains must be laundered. The shipping wrap must be removed from the dishwasher. The shelf over the 2 compartment sink must be replaced. The leaking plumbing under the 2 compartment sink must be repaired. The wheeled cart must be scrubbed clean. The walk-in cooler door must be thoroughly cleaned.
