La Cuisson Cafe

La Cuisson Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato Originally, I went to Beacoup Bakery after a friend had recommend it. But since all the seats were taken with a big lineup, we decided to go to Sweet Obsession instead. However, that place was also the same situation. In the end, we ended up in Kerrisdale area and came upon La Cuisson Cafe. It seemed like a regular cafe with some interesting decor, so I was a bit surprised to see what seemed to be the owner seat us to a table and offer High Tea along with the regular menu.

Nice infographic explaining the different drinks!idearabbit-lacuisson4 idearabbit-lacuisson6 idearabbit-lacuisson12I wouldn’t expect High Tea from this place – the setting didn’t fit in for my image of a Victorian High Tea setting. However, the staff were very friendly and helpful in making our decisions on what to get. We both got the special offer of drink and cake combo.

idearabbit-lacuisson5idearabbit-lacuisson8I ordered the Tea Combo $11.95 since I wanted something caffeine free. I got the Creme Caramel tea with Caramel Pear Mousse Cake (yes, in the mood for some caramel stuff…lol) Regularly, the tea would be $6.95 with $5.95 cake = $12.90

idearabbit-lacuisson9 idearabbit-lacuisson11The glass tea pot sat on a glass coffee cafe candle warmer. Very nice! The tea was delicious! The tea cup was lovely. The cake was super soft and not sweet – just the kind of cake I like!! :) Apparently, the cakes are made by the owner’s wife without the use of chemical and quality ingredients.

idearabbit-lacuisson7Sheepie ordered the Latte and also Caramel Pear Mousse Cake combo $9.95. The latte came in a interesting cup with a coaster. Sheepie was super delighted about the place (as he has never been to a High Tea before). We didn’t have High Tea, but the experience is still a step-up from your average coffee shop, which he liked.

idearabbit-lacuisson10I don’t think I’d get the High Tea here, but the cake and tea are excellent. They do run pretty low on their cakes by the end of the day though.

Christmas Eve
I checked online to find a place for dessert on Christmas Eve, only to find that most places were closed. I phone La Cuisson and was happy to know that they were open till 6pm.

idearabbit-lacuisson13 idearabbit-lacuisson14I ordered the same combo as last time (tea with cake) and got a Chocolate Mousse for the cake. I’m not quite sure, but the bottom crunchy layer seemed a bit nutty, so I gave the bottom layer to Sheepie. If you are super allergic to nuts, best to ask which cakes could contain nuts!
Again, it was a nice and relaxing experience. It was not full again – but then again, it was Eve.

Update

We returned this time with a group of 7 people. I had my usual combo of tea and cake $11.95. Once again, I got the Creme Caramel tea with Caramel Pudding this time. Their desserts are always different each time we come, so it’s quite interesting to try something new each time.

idearabbit_lacuisson22So cute!!!

idearabbit_lacuisson26idearabbit_lacuisson23As always, it delightful with the beautiful tea cups, and the candle-lit tea pots. The pudding was light, and not overly sweet. I could have had 3 more of them, lol.

idearabbit_lacuisson24 idearabbit_lacuisson25Good service, good tea and dessert with great atmosphere. Love coming back.

MyCup Coffee & Tea on 49th

MyCup Coffee & Tea on UrbanspoonSheepie ordered the Chocolate covered waffles. The chocolate was melting since it was sitting on a warm plate. Not sure if this is intended. He also got an Ice Coffee. It wasn’t sweetened, so that was good, allowing the customer to customize their level on their own.

The cafe is spacious and quite comforting especially in the summer time when the sun is shining through the windows which the cafe has lots of as it sits on the corner of the block. However, they do have their AC cranked up, so we didn’t stay too long.

Gem Chocolates

Gem Chocolates on Urbanspoon

I’m not so much of a chocolate fan. I don’t hate it, but I could live without it. However, with Sheepie who’s become a hard-core hobby-chocolatier, I’ve slowly grown to know more about the difference in tastes. We have gone to several chocolate stores, but I must say, that I actually like Gem Chocolates the most.

It’s a very small shop in Kerrisdale with 4-5 chairs at the counter by the window. The wall is blue, the room is sparse in terms of decor, but there are many selections of chocolates available. The price per chocolate wasn’t listed, but Sheepie got 7 pieces, and came just over $12. I ordered 2 pieces with a small tea latte which came out to be $6.30 (including tax).
When I used to buy Lindt chocolate, I thought they were really expensive…now after going to check out Thomas Haas, Chocolate Arts and Koko Monk, it seems like we’re slowly getting used to getting charged more than $1 per piece. Of course, Lindt is manufactured by the millions, while these local chocolatiers make it by hand.idearabbit_gemchocolates1

Glenn Knowles – owner and chocolatier

idearabbit-gemchocolates2idearabbit_gemchocolates6Look at all those selections! :D

So pretty!!!idearabbit_gemchocolates5idearabbit_gemchocolates3

Sheepie bought a lot :P Truly gems!

Glenn Knowles is the owner and chocolatier. Sheepie kept talking to him, not surprisingly (as many chocolatier seems to be), Glenn knows German so they were chatting away in German. Glenn had just been experimenting some new flavours and gave some to us (we came with a group of 5 ppl). The first one was caramel. We tried guessing what the fruit flavour was, and many of us thought it was apple, but it was passion fruit. It was very good. When he knew I was Japanese, he told me he had just gotten some shiso (perilla – herbal leaf) mixed in with chocolate. I’ve had shiso in sushi, salads and pickled vegetables, but would have never expected to go well with chocolate. But surprisingly, it was really good! I hope next time I go back, he’ll have it as an actual chocolate!

I just love how pretty they all look!! From patterns from transfer sheets, to marble looking colours, or sprinkles. Very simple, but cute and designy. For those who are gluten-sensitive, these chocolates are for you! They are gluten-free and made with organic, fair trade chocolates.

Glenn is very friendly, and I love his chocolates! I must go back to try more :)

I did end up going back again, and this time, I tried the two front  and far right chocolate in the above photo. The famous Berry Blue (the cube with blue transfer sheet patterns on it) tasted a bit alchololic, but none-the-less, ‘berry’ good. ;) Rich in flavour. I love~

The new Shiso chocolate that he was experimenting the last time we were there had been made (far top right), and Glenn told me that he left the actual leaves inside so that flavour was much richer. Indeed. I tried one and I was very impressed. Very unique and tasteful. I wish I could get my parents to try it.

The Caramel Creme (blue dome) had the caramel ooze out as soon as as I bit into it. Mmmm….so fun to taste all the flavours!

Easter Special

idearabbit-gemchocolate10

For Easter, I tried his Coconut gelato. OMG! SOOOoooooo good! And I was expecting a small single scoop like many other gelato places, but it was huge! I shared it with Sheepie. My friend also got it and he loved it as well. The best coconut gelato around. I must go back for more…idearabbit-gemchocolate11Of course, being Easter and a creator of IdeaRabbit, how can I not try the bunny decorated chocolate? So cute!!
