Mambo Cafe

Click to add a blog post for Mambo Cafe on ZomatoOut of the numerous vendors in Aberdeen mall, we decided to try out Mambo Cafe. I was craving for some noodles so I ordered Chicken Chow Mein $7.75 from the main menu board. There were some people waiting with their numbers so it seemed a bit back up. We ordered at 5:10pm. There were orders made after us that kept getting their orders so we wondered if we ordered something extraordinary. We finally had our noodles at 5:36pm.

Noodles were tasty, and the chicken were tender. Leaves you a bit thirsty afterwards, but good flavour and fresh ingredients.

Pho Queen 皇后越南餐廳

Pho Queen 皇后越南餐廳 on UrbanspoonA friend suggested going here after I mentioned I wanted some pho. It was about 4pm on a Sunday and there were only 2 other tables occupied with some take outs during our meal.
The tables and condiment containers were dirty. There was one server lady who was friendly but was serving wearing black rubber boots?! The place seemed like a typical pho place – slightly run down, although there was a nice big chandelier in the middle… Sheepie noticed that the paper wrappers for all the chopsticks were reused. Later on, we saw the serve prepping the supposedly washed chopsticks into used paper wrappers. Argh! One of our tea cups was really dirty – as if it was straight from the grey dish bins that’s been sitting out for a while. Of course, we asked for new one! The dishwasher also brought out the large trays with cups and utensils out to the dining area, making a racket and sorting them out.

The prices had been changed twice.idearabbit-phoqueen4I ordered #10 Pho Queen Dac Biet $7.50 (small). Despite the turnoff points of the actual restaurant, the pho itself was pretty good. I should have ordered the large, as the small wasn’t enough for me. idearabbit-phoqueen5Sheepie ordered the Curry Chicken with rice. Looked good, but he wasn’t too happy with the bones and quality of the meat.

We all shared an order of spring rolls $5 among the three of us which was ok.
Good pho, dirty restaurant. Don’t think I’d return.

Saboten at Aberdeen Mall

Saboten 勝博殿 on UrbanspoonLocated in the food court amongst many other restaurants, we decided to try out Saboten. I was immediately drawn into the plastic models that showed each menu set, compared to the not-so appealing photos of food that other restaurants were showcasing. Ahh…love the plastic menus…makes me feel like I’m back in Japan…

idearabbit-saboten idearabbit-saboten2Anyways, I decided to get the #10 Loin Katsu Curry $8.25. The deep fried pork cutlet was very crispy and the curry was really good. Ah, also reminds me of Japan… It was quite filling. Miso was authentic, though a bit salty for me and no huge tofu or negi pieces like the ones in the plastic model. But nice addition of pickles which goes well with the rice.

idearabbit-saboten4Sheepie had the #4 Saboten set $8.95 where there was tartar sauce – which I think is added for Westerners…and indeed, Sheepie liked it more than the traditional sauce. He complimented that the miso soup was good, and he rarely says that – so it must be a good thing :)

I was very surprised at the very poor rating on Urbanspoon. The service was ok, the timing was alright, prices were fair and the food was pretty decent for a food court.

Would dine here again if we were going to eat at the food court in Aberdeen mall.
