eBook Process: Part 2 “Gift From the Moon”

Sorry about the delay! I was super excited, and as you can see on the black and white Kindle, it looks ok :)

However, it seems that there are lots of problems with the coding, and how it’s laid out. Sooooooo…yesterday, I started redoing the project all over again T_T…I’m just hoping that this time, it will work. Although I can’t make it perfect for all the different platforms out there, but my main target are those who have the different Kindle models, iPad and Android tablets. Unfortunately, I still can’t get the Kindle app to work on my Android phone…T_T…

Anways, I spent hours yesterday redoing the images, since the text floating over the image is NOT working with the codes I have. I know it can be done since I’ve seen the samples from Kindle…but can’t seem to figure out their codes…T_T. However, I am just going go with the image at the top and the text below instead. Perhaps in a future edition, and they make it a little more simpler to create!! will I have a book where the text is integrated on top of the illustrations.

So there is still tons of editing and redoing still to be done…T_T…I just hope it all works out in the end!!!

eBook Process: Part 1 “Gift From the Moon”

Well! This is exciting! I’m working on a children illustration ebook called “Gift from the Moon” for Kindle!!! :D I did the illustration and story way back in 2004 for a book contest. It didn’t win, but I really enjoyed the process and the end result. Originally, it was written in Japanese, but then when I started thinking of actually publishing (hardcopy), I thought of adding the English version together, so that you’d get two languages in one book! Below is what it looked like when it was printed on a laser-printer. It looks pretty decent, no? However, with the cost of printing on the press, and thinking about storage and distribution and all that, my dreams came to a halt.

But now with the increasing popularity of ebooks, both for consumers and authors, my dreams of publishing my very own book may not be just a dream, but a reality.

Here is what it looks like when opened with the Kindle app (free) on a PC and Mac computer. It’s been quite a headache trying to get the text to float on top of the image. I am no coder, and though I’m ok with basic HTML, the CSS drove me nuts – so I’m happy that it looks ok, despite getting two warning messages when put through the KindleGen to make the mobi file.

I tried opening the book on my Kindle app on my Android phone, but it kept crashing. However, since it opens on my friend’s phone, it may not be the file that’s corrupt, but my phone needs to upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3 for the Kindle to work properly – but that, is a whole another story of headaches with technology. LOL

I’m really hoping that after all of this, that it’ll be accepted by Amazon!! Keep your fingers crossed!

Tomorrow, I’ll be posting on how my ebook looks on the black and white Kindle! So stay tuned!!

Steve Jobs 1955-2011

You don’t have to be a designer or artist to know who Steve Jobs was. He was everywhere and his products were everywhere, and it changed how we viewed our world. He was the co-founder of Apple and the iconic logo could be one of the most recognizable symbol along with McDonalds.

I still remember being fascinated by those old black screens with the green text (Apple III). When you wanted to make a simple box, you had to use commands like ‘RT 90′ and took forever to do any simple shape. Then in junior high, I was blown away with the model Macintosh. It was the first colour computer that I had seen and was amazed at it’s complexity, especially with graphics. I stayed after school to work on projects or play games whenever I could. I knew around that time that I wanted to be a graphic designer or computer animator.

The art college I went to used Macs because of it’s colour correctness, usability, durability, and integration with graphic software. But it was a time when Macs and PCs weren’t all that compatible, so transferring files from one platform was a headache.

Soon, the music industry was revolutionized with ipod and itunes, though I never really got into those. It allowed other companies to make similar products, but Apple kept the lead. Same with the iphone, though I must say Android is doing well…

I still prefer using a Mac for work, and wonder what the future holds for Apple.
Nonetheless, whether you use any Apple products or not, our lives have been greatly changed by this man.

He struggled with a pancreatic cancer and liver transplant. He was 56 years old.

R.I.P. Steve Jobs
