Mochi Bubble Tea Cafe

Mochi Bubble Tea Cafe on UrbanspoonI had a coupon for a discount on the Creme Brule from Mochi so I wanted to check this place out. It was also past 11pm, so there weren’t a lot of places to choose from that were still open. Luckily, they were open till 2am!

The restaurant is an open space, half-renovated looking place, trying to look high-end, but not really making the effort to. The staff were young people and so were most of the customers who were playing board games or digital gadgets.

Creme Brule

We ordered the Thai Style Tom Yum Soup Seafood $8.99. It was nothing special…not a fan of it, the Green Thai Curry $8.99 was better, and came with hot sour soup. The mango bubble tea on the other hand was really good. For dessert, we ordered the Creme Brule. It was super sweet. It was ok…

Other than the fact that it’s open late, I wasn’t too thrilled on the food. I wont be going back…

Do not let the name fool you. It’s NOT Thai food. It’s Chinese. Other than the so called Thai Pad noodles and Tom Yum Soup (which they never seems to have made), everything is Chinese.

The curry rice noodle is not spicy at all. For me, it’s fine, but many people feels it tastes bland. Fried rice is also bland, but I prefer that, even though more saltier and MSG loaded rice tastes better. The noodles with wonton – which I get often more than anything else is really bland. I usually have my Japanese tsu-yu (concentrated soy sauce that’s already flavoured for dishes like udon/soba) in my office fridge that I add.

Everything else is often really greasy, oily and deep fried. The quality of the meat they use isn’t that great, so I don’t usually order those, though I have tried most of them. The chicken in the spicy chicken has a lot fat in it, making me spit out hard fat out. Yuck…I hate those.

The prices are relatively good compared to other of the food booths in the food court. However, I did notice a increase in price after the HST return to GST/PST.

Comes in a small to-go packet

This is a small for $5.67 (tax included) which has spicy curry noodles, fried rice and beef mushroom. It’s not really filling, so a large might be suitable for most people for around $8 (pictured below).

Mango Thai

Mango Thai on Urbanspoon
My friend and I went on a busy evening – the night of the fireworks, and being located right on Davie, it was really busy. But luckily, there were free tables, so we didn’t have any problems finding a seat.

We thought it was those order and self serve places, so I was surprised as a lady brought us each a glass of water. We did go up to the till later on to order, but I guess they would have come around if we sat longer to wait. But we didn’t want to be too late for the fireworks.

We both ordered the Curry Combo A $11 – both with Pineapple curry. The lady that brought the water earlier was there, but it looked like she didn’t really understand the menu. She kept asking which one it was. The manager looking woman – who seemed really tough was talking to a young guy working there. She didn’t seemed too pleased at how he was working. The young lady told us to order from the the guy. She hastily left the area trying to tell the guy in another language what we might have wanted to order. To make it less confusing, he asked us to tell him the order again.  I thought it wasn’t very organized, and it seemed like it was everyone’s first day.  Perhaps it was. Maybe they’re working only because of the fireworks…

Anyways, the guy was really friendly and smiling the entire time. He seemed unaffected by the chaos that the others might feel. He asked if we wanted the curry mild, medium or hot. I ordered mine mild, while my friend asked for medium. You had the choice of chicken or beef. We both ordered chicken.

First came the soup and salad. Nothing fancy but it was ok. The main was curry, rice and spring rolls. The spring roll was really hot (temp. wise) and was delicious. It was the first time trying out pineapple curry, but I found the spice of the curry and the sweetness of the pineapple to go very well. It was quite filling, and $11 for the combo is a really good deal, especially if just the pineapple curry dish would normally cost $8 for 16 oz and $11 for 22 oz alone.

The restaurant isn’t anything fancy, but if you’re looking for something faster and inexpensive, this is a must try. Next time, I’d like to try out the Entree Combo $11!!

Note: watch out for their hours. They’re not open all day.
