Viet Sub

Click to add a blog post for Viet Sub Vietnamese Cuisine on ZomatoFor a quick bite of Pho on Robson street, my friend wanted to try Viet Sub. It was a tiny hole in the wall, and since it was summer, we ate outside on the patio/sidewalk. With a tiny table and people bustling by you, it’s not a relax and chill kind of dining place. But the prices are quite cheap for their location and portion. The staff was friendly and helpful. He brought out our food and sauces outside and explained things to us.

One thing I didn’t like about it was the use of all disposable dishes for a dine in. Everything was either disposable plastic or styrofoam – not environmentally friendly. Other than that, I give it a thumbs up for the food and service.

Mambo Cafe

Click to add a blog post for Mambo Cafe on ZomatoOut of the numerous vendors in Aberdeen mall, we decided to try out Mambo Cafe. I was craving for some noodles so I ordered Chicken Chow Mein $7.75 from the main menu board. There were some people waiting with their numbers so it seemed a bit back up. We ordered at 5:10pm. There were orders made after us that kept getting their orders so we wondered if we ordered something extraordinary. We finally had our noodles at 5:36pm.

Noodles were tasty, and the chicken were tender. Leaves you a bit thirsty afterwards, but good flavour and fresh ingredients.

Western Lake Chinese Restaurant

Click to add a blog post for Western Lake Chinese Seafood Restaurant on Zomato We had a reservation for 6 people on a Saturday at 7:30pm. The place was jam packed with lineups at the door.

idearabbit-westernlake idearabbit-westernlake2 idearabbit-westernlake7Since my friends had been here several times and were familiar with the menu, we mostly let them decide. I ordered the House Special Chow Mein $14.80. It was a pretty big portion and fair price. It was loaded with veggies and meat. Would I order this dish again? Yes.
The Ling Cod $33.80 (no pic) was good, though I thought it was pretty pricey. Since it was on the other side of the table (without the turning table), I didn’t get to try that much of it. Would I order this dish again? No.

idearabbit-westernlake4Squab $15.80. We had 2 orders of it ($31.60), and it was my first time trying a squab. At the time of serving, I didn’t know that they were young domestic pigeons…(usually under four weeks old). It didn’t have much meat on it, but the flavour was pretty good. For westerners that have grown up with buying meat from the store as just ‘meat’, beware that you will also get the deep fried head of the bird on the plate as well. Would I order this dish again? No.

idearabbit-westernlake6Diced Beef with Mushroom $14.80. This one was really tasty, though quite salty, so goes well with a bowl of rice. It came wrapped up in tinfoil in a shape of a swan. The staff unwrapped it to show steaming hot food inside. Would I order this dish again? Yes.

idearabbit-westernlake3Chef’s Specialty Shredded Chicken $12.80. Decent sized dish. Sheepie was surprised that it was a cold dish. Would I order this dish again? No.
The restaurant was kept well, service was good, though my friends did all the Chinese conversing, so not sure on their English. It was interesting to try different dishes – it’s always nice to go along with friends that know the cuisine well.
