Timbertrain Coffee Roasters

Timbertrain Coffee Roasters Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoLocated in the trendy area of Gastown, the interior continues this nostalgic, vintage look. The booths are creatively designed so that the seats can be shared from both sides.

I ordered the Latte $4.50. It was super creamy and super flavourful. It was good as coffee in Europe, which is hard to find in Vancouver. Nicely done latte art too.

My friend who seemed to know a lot about coffee asked detailed questions about her coffee. The staff was very knowledgeable.

Must return again!

Alpha Sushi Bar

Alpha Sushi Bar Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato4 of us were meeting up for dinner in this Japanese run sushi restaurant. Master Sushi Chef Yuji has been serving assortment of sashimi and sushi rolls since the opening of Alpha in Yaletown in 2005.

idearabbit_alphasushi2 idearabbit_alphasushi3The restaurant has a cozy, comfy feel to it. My friend and I arrived early, and were greated by a friendly staff. When the third person arrived, he wanted to change tables. The staff allowed us to change without any hesitation.

idearabbit_alphasushi1They served really good rice tea.

My friend got the Green Salad $6.50 with organic spring mix greens with our ginger soy dressing. A bit on the pricey end as there weren’t anything special about it, except that they were ‘organic’.

idearabbit_alphasushi5Good Japanese Pork Gyoza $6.75. Authentic!

Chicken Kara-Age $6.95

4 pieces of Japanese boneless fried chicken with their special soy vinegar sauce. Super crunchy on the outside, but juicy inside. Delicious!

Granville Roll $12.50 Mayo crab meat, chopped jalapeno, cucumber, tobiko wrapped in ABURI (torched) Yellowtail with jalapeno wasabi mayo sauce. The jalapeno wasabi in the sauce gave it a nice kick. Nicely bite-sized. idearabbit_alphasushi6

Regular Vancouver Roll was presented beautifully. The pieces were slightly too big. But good flavour and very fresh.

Overall, very good sushi. The service was good, but lacked good English at times. They forgot of was confused with my Vancouver Roll, either because Sheepie had also ordered one, or because there are 2 other Vancouver Rolls (Mango or Jalapeno). So I didn’t get my roll until I inquired about it near the end when everyone else was pretty much done. It’s a bit on the pricier end, but you do get good quality food.

Cartems Donuterie, Kitsilano

Cartems Donuterie Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoI had heard great reviews about this place, so even though I’m not a donut fan, I was pretty excited to check it out, as an Meetup event was taking place there on a Wednesday evening.

The place was pretty open and spacious, with one corner with wooden seats and tables decorated with a plant in a jar. Simple but sleek. There is a single large wooden table in the middle with outlets underneath, perfect for anyone wanting to work on their laptops for a long time or charge their phone. There are counter spaces by the window, and a nice small patio to the side. The rest of the cafe is very minimalistic, and even the bathroom was slick and modern for a donut shop.

idearabbit_cartem_broadway idearabbit_cartem_broadway2 idearabbit_cartem_broadway3 idearabbit_cartem_broadway4When I got there at 6:30pm, the only donuts that were left were the Classic $3.25. I was so bummed. I wanted to try the Earl Grey…boo. So anyways, Sheepie and I each got one. Sheepie had a coffee, but I just had water from the glass bottle available on the side.

The donut felt physically heavy. It wasn’t too sweet, but a bit too dense. I like fluffy things, so it wasn’t so attractive. I ended up giving half of it over to Sheepie, who was glad as he was ready to go and order another one.

By around 8:30pm or so, they were completely out of donuts. And many people came in to be disappointed. With the cafe being open for another hour and half, there will be more bummed out people. I wonder why they don’t make slightly more. Obviously, their donuts are in demand! Unless it just happens that they were super busy that day.

The staff were really friendly, and Sheepie had a long nice chat with them.

Love the interior design. The Classic donut, didn’t wow me, especially after the recent donut I had at 49th Parallel. (so much for not being into donuts – but it had cream! Which I love…not good for me though…). Still, I’m curious to try out the Earl Grey, so will certainly return. It’s a great place to relax and chill with friends.
