Alpha Sushi Bar

Alpha Sushi Bar Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato4 of us were meeting up for dinner in this Japanese run sushi restaurant. Master Sushi Chef Yuji has been serving assortment of sashimi and sushi rolls since the opening of Alpha in Yaletown in 2005.

idearabbit_alphasushi2 idearabbit_alphasushi3The restaurant has a cozy, comfy feel to it. My friend and I arrived early, and were greated by a friendly staff. When the third person arrived, he wanted to change tables. The staff allowed us to change without any hesitation.

idearabbit_alphasushi1They served really good rice tea.

My friend got the Green Salad $6.50 with organic spring mix greens with our ginger soy dressing. A bit on the pricey end as there weren’t anything special about it, except that they were ‘organic’.

idearabbit_alphasushi5Good Japanese Pork Gyoza $6.75. Authentic!

Chicken Kara-Age $6.95

4 pieces of Japanese boneless fried chicken with their special soy vinegar sauce. Super crunchy on the outside, but juicy inside. Delicious!

Granville Roll $12.50 Mayo crab meat, chopped jalapeno, cucumber, tobiko wrapped in ABURI (torched) Yellowtail with jalapeno wasabi mayo sauce. The jalapeno wasabi in the sauce gave it a nice kick. Nicely bite-sized. idearabbit_alphasushi6

Regular Vancouver Roll was presented beautifully. The pieces were slightly too big. But good flavour and very fresh.

Overall, very good sushi. The service was good, but lacked good English at times. They forgot of was confused with my Vancouver Roll, either because Sheepie had also ordered one, or because there are 2 other Vancouver Rolls (Mango or Jalapeno). So I didn’t get my roll until I inquired about it near the end when everyone else was pretty much done. It’s a bit on the pricier end, but you do get good quality food.

Croissanterie La Marseillaise

Croissanterie La Marseillaise Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoThis was the second time visiting the cafe. The first time, I only had a tea with a friend, so I wanted to give it another try for their desserts. Same as last time, the cafe is pretty bare although being right on Granville in busy downtown. Also, like last time, the first thing you notice as you go in are the flies swarming around in the middle.

idearabbit_croissanterie-la-marseillaise5

idearabbit_croissanterie-la-marseillaise1Despite some reviews of rude customer service, we had a pleasant woman serve us. When Sheepie was picky on which cake he wanted, the lady came around to the front of the counter to see which one he was pointing at.

idearabbit_croissanterie-la-marseillaise2I ordered the Chocolate Cup $4.95.

idearabbit_croissanterie-la-marseillaise6 idearabbit_croissanterie-la-marseillaise7I love cream, but this was a HUGE load of cream. There were more custard cream in the cream puffs – though surprisingly only in one of them. It tasted good, but I was done when I had a third of it.

idearabbit_croissanterie-la-marseillaise3 idearabbit_croissanterie-la-marseillaise4Sheepie had 2 cakes and a Drip Coffee (12oz) $2.65.

When I couldn’t finish my Chocolate Cup, I asked for a to-go box, and the lady gladly packaged it up for me.

Not sure why it’s so empty, but it does make it a bit lonely to be in there with no customers. I’m not sure, but it seemed like one person came in to use the bathroom, the other to charge her phone? and another man was eating out on the patio tables, even though I don’t think he was their customer.

We usually go to Breka around the corner, which is why I thought we’d try something different for a change. Good customer service, but unfortunately, this wont be replacing our Breka.

Heirloom Juices Co.

Heirloom Juice Co. Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoAfter yoga practice, my yogi classmates went to Heirloom for lunch. Some of us grabbed a smoothie, which I was tempted to get, but instead got the salad instead. I thought that we would get the already packaged salad in the glass refrigerated deli case, so even though I wanted the Kale Slaw, since it had sliced almonds in it, I got the Kale Caeser $8.95 instead which only had kale, capers and croutons. I wished it had all the goodies that the Slaw had, minus the nuts.

idearabbit-heirloom4idearabbit-heirloom3 idearabbit-heirloom2However, it turned out they made everything fresh (could be just our case) as there were some in the deli case. But I figured I could ask them to make one for me without almonds.

The salad was pretty good with an interesting, unique dressing. I still would have like more variety of ingredients, but that is my fault for not asking if they could make a Kale Slaw without almonds. Still, it was filling and felt really healthy just eating it. I find it pricey though considering they are not organic, GMO free or anything (at least not what I could find on their website).

idearabbit-heirloom1(sorry, I forgot to take a pic before eating most of it…I was so hungry…)

It’s mostly as take-out place since there are only like 3 counter seats along the window. The staff was friendly and cheerful.

The next time I went, I ordered the Kale Slaw without almonds. Mmm! So good. No wonder so many of my classmates always order and rave about it. It’s got a variety of ingredients. Fresh, good and healthy :)
