Nao Sushi

Nao Sushi 直寿し on UrbanspoonI somehow had the preconception that this restaurant was slightly higher-end place, so I was a bit disappointed to find that it wasn’t. The interior was simple with not much decor. Rows of tables and chairs which were quite packed already. It seemed a bit stuffy inside.

I was 20 minutes early to see my acquaintance, but I was seated at a table near the bar, with the grey dish bins across from my view. Without being asked, the server brought two cups of tea. Surely, the tea would be cold by the time my company arrived.

The place was quite busy, so I felt a little bad for taking up a table as I waited, but most of the people lining up were waiting for bigger than ‘for 2′ tables. Unfortunately, my acquaintance wasn’t going to be able to make it at the last minute, and so our meeting was called off. I didn’t want to walk out without getting any food as I had driven all the way here (out of my way), so I ordered a Negitoro roll $2.50 and an Alaska roll $3.95 to go. The wait time for take out was alright. Service depended on who you were dealing with.

The food was good and was inexpensive. It was an average sushi place. Would I go back? Maybe, if I was in the area and craving sushi.

Joey in Burnaby

Joey Burnaby on Urbanspoon

Huge restaurant on Lougheed Highway near Brentwood Mall. The interior seems like a Yaletown-ish look with a mix of vintage decor but modern, slick look. The staff here looks like they could be models. The higher-end look is also reflected in the price of the dishes.

It was a group of us, and we ordered dishes to share, as well as our own main dish. I ordered the Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo $18 with garlic, cream, nutmeg, arugula, shaved Grana Padano. It was really good and filling.

Since it was the first time going there, I left the others decide the other dishes.

The Japanese Gyoza $11.50, pork dumplings with hot mustard was presented very well and tasted good too.

The Szechuan Edamame $8.25 (wok tossed with chilies, garlic, soy sauce) was interesting mix of Japanese food and Chinese flavour. It was quite addictive, lol. Though I thought I’d never pay $8.25 for a bowl of edamame.

I don’t think I would have ordered it if it were coming out of my own pocket.

The bathroom was fancy with really high walls and heavy wooden doors. The decor in the hallways were neat and modern classy. They have free valet parking, and they’ll also vacuum the inside too!
I quite enjoyed the dining experience. I have since gone back once and had a salad with friends, but will need to go back to try out more! :D

Sushimoto

Sushimoto 鮨元 on UrbanspoonI had another big group to take (11ppl) and they were patient with my change in number (increase) in the last hour. I had organized a bowling event at Rev’s Bowling, so I had looked into what sushi place was in that area and fount Sushimoto just 100 meters from the bowling alley.

This Korean-run place was new, modern and spacious. The uniqueness were the figures displayed behind glass and on the walls.idearabbit_sushimoto_1idearabbit_sushimoto_2 idearabbit_sushimoto_4

idearabbit_sushimoto_3 We got two booths so we split up. The menu had a nice cover, and the menu itself was pretty extensive with photos which is always a plus! I love their cute tea cups!idearabbit_sushimoto_5

I ordered the Garlic Gyoza. 5 pieces of steamed  gyoza with la-u and green onions. It was really spicy for my taste, but still very good.idearabbit_sushimoto_6

I also had the Kitsune Udon. It wasn’t extraordinary or anything, but was satisfactory. My friend complained about the saba which was pricey and small.

Overall, the service was good, though they did mixed up our separate bills quite a bit… I would definitely go back if I’m in the area. Good decent food, atmosphere and prices for the most part.
