Jinya 陣家

Ramen Jinya 陣家 on Urbanspoon

We went to Jinya on a Friday evening around 7pm. I had heard that you had to line up and wait, so was happy to see that we were able to get a table as soon as we walked in. However, it was constantly busy, and there was always at least one group that would wait at the door for 5-10 minutes.

Before Jinya, the location had a different ramen-ya – Ezogiku. They were the early, perhaps even the first ramen-ya here in Vancouver. They used to be really small, and ghetto, but it was really popular as it was the only place you could dine out for ramen. I still remember the cramped 5-6 seating tiny restaurant over back 20 years ago.

Like many popular ramen-ya, there were tables, counters and big tables where strangers sat next to each other as you ate. I really don’t like this style. A ramen-ya is not a place to take your date haha – unless you both agree that you like this eating style. I prefer to get my own private table, and not have to squeeze in between unknown strangers and listen to their conversation.idearabbit-jinya22

Small selection on menu

I also can not stand the Japanese servers shouting “Ichimei-sama desu” (one person has arrived) and each of the customers orders across the restaurant. The restaurant is already loud enough with customers jam packed into the restaurant. Yes, I am Japanese (sort of lol), but I don’t like it, and usually don’t end up going back (like Guu for example), even though their food may be good. I am just not the hussle bustle, let’s cram into a small area in very loud place to dine. But that’s just me. :P

I ordered the Shio Ramen $9.75 which was quite oily. It seemed that it lacked a bit of ‘koku’, and the men (noodle) was again very thin like Marutama Ramen‘s). Sheepie also didn’t think anything too much of his cold soup-less Tan Tan Men $9.75. With people waiting, they bring you the bill right away, and feels like they expect you to go right away. No pressure right?

Will we return? Likely not, unless I’m dragged over by a friend that really wants to go there. One friend said he liked it, but he thinks their ramen is loaded with MSG. He said he didn’t feel too well afterwards. I also talked with another ramen-lover friend, and he said he really liked Jinya. So did this Japanese guy…so I guess it’s just us who’s not really into it… I dunno, I’m into the traditional, simple, not-super oily soup ramen. Perhaps I’m too old fashioned :P

Jinya – Second Round
This time, I went in with my dad for lunch on a weekday. It was still crowded, but not full house. It seemed a bit more roomier and breathable than last time. This time, we sat on a high stool at a big oval table. As we sat down the group at the table got up and left so we had the entire table to ourselves.

A friend had mentioned that the Black Tonkotsu Jinya ramen was pretty good, so I decided I’d give that a try this time. $11.25 (noodles in pork broth with pork chashu, kikurage, bamboo shoots, green onion, seasoned egg, dried seaweed, black garlic oil, garlic chips).

This time, I had my dad (a Japanese born+raised) as guidance on how real Japanese ramen is suppose to be. Although previously, I have been complaining about really thin and al dente ramen, after my dad tried it out, he said that ramen was suppose to be thin for shio/shoyu. He ordered the Miso Ramen which had much thicker noodles. I felt both men (noodles) were al dente, but he said it was cooked properly through. This has changed my thinking on ramen. I had always remembered ramen in Japan to be like the ones at Menya. But perhaps I have been wrong. Of course there are tons of different kinds of men and soup base, each location with their unique flavours and texture but perhaps I had gotten use to one type of ramen.

With that in mind, I tried out Jinya’s ramen with a new perspective. Although I wasn’t still too big of a fan of the type of men they used and the soup was a bit too oily, I didn’t think it was as bad as last time. However, the price was a bit outrageous. Even my dad thought it was way too pricey for ramen.

Gurkha Himalayan Kitchen

Gurkha Himalayan Kitchen on Urbanspoon

My friend had wanted to check out this restaurant for a while so we decided to check it out. It seems that it had gone through some renovations – at least from the outside.

We went around 7pm on a Thursday evening. Many chose to sit outside on the back patio, fenced up to cover the ugly alley usually lurking with with bums and garbage.
My friend refused to eat out there since he always walked down that alley. He knew how dirty it is from the alley side.

Nepali Roti $2

I was ok with inside, so no confrontation there. I’m not a patio person anyways, but we sat at one of the the tables closer to the window.

The restaurant is quite small, but is nicely decorated. The chairs and tables aren’t fancy, but comfortable to dine in.

We didn’t really know what to order…but we decided on getting two dishes. Piro Shrimp: Shrimp marinated in ginger-garlic and chilli paste. Spiced, grilled and garnishedwith fresh lemon juice $9
Sherpa Chicken: Fresh chicken cooked with broth extracted from herbs and mixed with curry sauce, flavoured with Himalayan peppercorns $13

Piro Shrimp $9

At first, I was a bit disappointed in the size of the Piro Shrimp dish…but the flavour of the shrimp was amazing. The spices they used was sooooo good! Delicious. I think it would have been even better if the shrimps were juicy and plump as other places I’ve been to.

Sherpa Chicken $13

The Sherpa was excellent!  Wow! The spices and herbs! so rich in flavour and the chicken melted in my mouth! Goes really well with the rice it comes with. Mmmmmm. The salad was a little unexciting and sad. The Nepali Roti (which the server translated as ‘bread’) was cut up ‘wraps’ for dipping with the sauce. Unlike bread, it’s not filling, but nonetheless, was good with the sauce, just as the server said it would.

With taxes and tip, the two dishes (+Roti) came out to $28…a bit pricey, but really good food and dining experience. All the servers were really friendly, happy, patient and professional.

I’d definitely like to go back and try more of their dishes!!

Tramonto

Tramonto on UrbanspoonA fine dining restaurant at the River Rock Casino in Richmond. We were greeted by a expressionless host, and he gave the menus over to our server who was excellent. Very friendly, calm and professional.

For some reason, we had reserved, but couldn’t sit by the window since they were only for those that reserved. We told him that we had reserved a table. His explanation wasn’t clear on what the issue was…maybe we had to specifically reserve a table by the window. However, later on, we heard the waiter ask another customer if they wanted to sit by the window or interior. But we didn’t give it too much thought to it. It wasn’t a huge deal…idearabbit-tramonto20

By the window, there was a table with a dad and young son. Both wearing caps. I thought it was strange to see people wearing hats in such a formal restaurant. Not only that, but the dad was wearing a baseball jacket and was talking loudly on his cell phone.

From time to time, he would look this way and that, slouching, sniffing loud. He looked worn out. My friend really got frustrated when he started playing video footage on his phone – loud. Had he no consideration for others trying to enjoy a quiet dinner?idearabbit-tramonto23

It was Wayne Gretzky and his son!

At first, when we saw the manager-looking gentleman, we thought he came to kick him out. However, they seemed to be chatting away.  Finally, the man got up, and posed with the manager, as the boy took photos of them. HUH?! What’s going on? He turned around and I finally saw his entire face – wait a minute!! That’s Wayne Gretzky!

I could hear the old lady at another table say ‘Is that really him?’ Sure enough, she got up and took photos with him too. If I had encountered him another way, I would be thrilled to have a photo with him to showoff to everyone. However, his behavior had disappointed me. Just because he is rich and famous doesn’t mean he can do whatever he wants and disturb others dining there.

Now, onto the food. :P

The server gave us sparkling water ‘on the house’ and bread to start off with. We ordered Antipasto for two $25. It had a good variety from veggies, hams, salami, seafood; scallops, marinated clams and mussles, grilled prawns, house smoked BC wild salmon and lucanica sausages. The sausages were too dry and hard. The rest were delicious. The balsamic dressing was nice, but I thought they poured too much of it. It would have been nice if we could pour it ourselves to our liking. The presentation was not there for a fancy restaurant. It seems just placed onto the plate into a mountain without much thought of visual appeal.

Mushroom soup $13

The mushroom soup $13 had BC wild mushroom velouté, Parmigiano-Reggiano, smoked bacon mushroom and Gruyère vol-au-vent. It was hot and tasted good. I didn’t want the butter chunk they threw on top of the soup though. The Gruyère vol-au-vent was already quite oily and buttery.idearabbit-tramonto25

Pork

Finally, the Duck: pan roasted Fraser Valley Peking breast, juniper spiced sausage, sweet corn grilled fennel, elderberry jus  came $35. My friend asked why a sausage came with a duck dish. The veggie selection was super small, but the duck was very soft and despite the weird combination of having the sausage, it was also very tasty.

idearabbit-tramonto26Special complimentary dessert for me! :D

We declined for dessert, but since we had said we were celebrating my birthday, they brought some nice treats!! Wow! That’s great!!

I found the service to be excellent. The food perhaps could be bumped up a little more in terms with flavouring, use of spices, amount of butter or balsamic dressing and presentation…(the dessert was beautiful though). Not sure if I’d return for the price…
