Cartems Donuterie, Kitsilano

Cartems Donuterie Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoI had heard great reviews about this place, so even though I’m not a donut fan, I was pretty excited to check it out, as an Meetup event was taking place there on a Wednesday evening.

The place was pretty open and spacious, with one corner with wooden seats and tables decorated with a plant in a jar. Simple but sleek. There is a single large wooden table in the middle with outlets underneath, perfect for anyone wanting to work on their laptops for a long time or charge their phone. There are counter spaces by the window, and a nice small patio to the side. The rest of the cafe is very minimalistic, and even the bathroom was slick and modern for a donut shop.

idearabbit_cartem_broadway idearabbit_cartem_broadway2 idearabbit_cartem_broadway3 idearabbit_cartem_broadway4When I got there at 6:30pm, the only donuts that were left were the Classic $3.25. I was so bummed. I wanted to try the Earl Grey…boo. So anyways, Sheepie and I each got one. Sheepie had a coffee, but I just had water from the glass bottle available on the side.

The donut felt physically heavy. It wasn’t too sweet, but a bit too dense. I like fluffy things, so it wasn’t so attractive. I ended up giving half of it over to Sheepie, who was glad as he was ready to go and order another one.

By around 8:30pm or so, they were completely out of donuts. And many people came in to be disappointed. With the cafe being open for another hour and half, there will be more bummed out people. I wonder why they don’t make slightly more. Obviously, their donuts are in demand! Unless it just happens that they were super busy that day.

The staff were really friendly, and Sheepie had a long nice chat with them.

Love the interior design. The Classic donut, didn’t wow me, especially after the recent donut I had at 49th Parallel. (so much for not being into donuts – but it had cream! Which I love…not good for me though…). Still, I’m curious to try out the Earl Grey, so will certainly return. It’s a great place to relax and chill with friends.

Boulangerie la Parisienne Yaletown

Boulangerie la Parisienne Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoOn a Friday after work, Sheepie and I were walking around Yaletown looking for a nice cafe. We came upon this small, corner cafe, and though we were a bit worried on how it was completely empty while the rest of Yaletown was bustling with people, we gave this place a try.

idearabbit_boulangerie_la_parisienne4I had the Chocolate African $4.79.

idearabbit_boulangerie_la_parisienne5Sheepie had the Chocolate Truffle and a Small Latte $3.25.

idearabbit_boulangerie_la_parisienne6 The sides were completely open giving it an open patio, but sheltered feel.

I was extremely disappointed in the cake. It seemed like it was really fluffy with cream, but to my dismay, it was literally like rubber. The lady fingers tasted chemical. I should have stopped eating it right away. I kept trying and forcing myself, considering I paid nearly $5 for this slice of cake. Unfortunately, I could barely finish half. It tasted disgusting. It was the worst cake I’ve ever had in my life.

Sheepie’s cake was also super hard. It was just gounache that was solid. It was rich, but I wouldn’t call it a delicious cake. I gave my cake to him, but even he, who has a sweet tooth couldn’t finish it. It wasn’t edible.

I’m not sure about the coffee, Sheepie kind of drowned it in brown sugar, so it was super sweet, covering the coffee flavour. Service was satisfactory.

Both of us felt really unwell for several hours afterwards. Will never return!

Cafe Joie

Cafe Joie Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoSix of us arrived at Cafe Joie around 10pm, but it was super packed and busy. A lot of young Asians were socializing in the modern, slick cafe. We had to wait a bit for a bigger table to open up. Once we ordered, we were given a cool looking buzzer.

idearabbit_cafe-joie1 idearabbit_cafe-joie6 idearabbit_cafe-joie5 idearabbit_cafe-joie4 idearabbit_cafe-joie3 idearabbit_cafe-joie2I had the Fresh Strawberry Waffles $10.99 with strawberries, blueberries, sliced pecans, whip cream, macaron, and two scoops of strawberry ice cream. I completely forgot to tell the staff not to put in any nuts (it’s because my friend was treating me so he was ordering, while I was already seated at a table). I gave the macaron to Sheepie, and put the pecans to the side of the plate.

The waffle was super soft, which was a bit surprising. We were used to the crispy edges, so this seemed spongy. I prefer the crispy outside like the ones served at Nero Waffles.

Because of the good reviews, maybe I had high expectancy from this cafe. But I don’t think I would pay $12 for their waffles. I’d still go to Nero.
