Baguette & Co.

Baguette & Co on UrbanspoonMy friend had discovered a cafe on Davie, so we tried out for desserts after dining out Gurkha.

I tried the 3 mini pastries for $4, while my friend got the Triple Chocolate cake piece.

My mini pastries were flan, whipped cream puff, and the mini version of the triple chocolate. All of them of really good! None were sweet and sugary like many North American cakes. The Flan was probably my favourite. A hint of vanilla. Very simple, but delicious. They were all very fresh and super soft – just the way I like them!

The staff were really friendly, patient with me trying to choose the 3 items. The cashier guy and my friend starting chatting up about cell phones, as the cashier mentioned he had just gotten his hands on his first smartphone after he saw me taking photos of the cafe with my smartphone.

Cutlery is hung in a container on the wall, along with glasses for cold water – all self serve.
It’s a cute cafe, wish they had a better name than Baguette & Co…I think I never went in cuz it just seemed like they only had sandwiches…and adding the ‘& Co’ just comes off as cold and almost corporate like…(not to be confused with Corp., but still)

2nd Time

idearabbit-baguetteco10The Latte is small and really strong on the espresso side. Sheepie has complimented that the cafe smells like roasted coco bean and was almost like authentic coffee like in Europe. I did enjoy it, but I am super sensitive to caffeine, and although I only had some sips, I couldn’t sleep till 6am that night…

We’ve been back again since then, and the pastries are always consistently good. Good service too.

Anyways, glad to have discovered this place! I’d definitely want to check out the one on Broadway!

Gurkha Himalayan Kitchen

Gurkha Himalayan Kitchen on Urbanspoon

My friend had wanted to check out this restaurant for a while so we decided to check it out. It seems that it had gone through some renovations – at least from the outside.

We went around 7pm on a Thursday evening. Many chose to sit outside on the back patio, fenced up to cover the ugly alley usually lurking with with bums and garbage.
My friend refused to eat out there since he always walked down that alley. He knew how dirty it is from the alley side.

Nepali Roti $2

I was ok with inside, so no confrontation there. I’m not a patio person anyways, but we sat at one of the the tables closer to the window.

The restaurant is quite small, but is nicely decorated. The chairs and tables aren’t fancy, but comfortable to dine in.

We didn’t really know what to order…but we decided on getting two dishes. Piro Shrimp: Shrimp marinated in ginger-garlic and chilli paste. Spiced, grilled and garnishedwith fresh lemon juice $9
Sherpa Chicken: Fresh chicken cooked with broth extracted from herbs and mixed with curry sauce, flavoured with Himalayan peppercorns $13

Piro Shrimp $9

At first, I was a bit disappointed in the size of the Piro Shrimp dish…but the flavour of the shrimp was amazing. The spices they used was sooooo good! Delicious. I think it would have been even better if the shrimps were juicy and plump as other places I’ve been to.

Sherpa Chicken $13

The Sherpa was excellent!  Wow! The spices and herbs! so rich in flavour and the chicken melted in my mouth! Goes really well with the rice it comes with. Mmmmmm. The salad was a little unexciting and sad. The Nepali Roti (which the server translated as ‘bread’) was cut up ‘wraps’ for dipping with the sauce. Unlike bread, it’s not filling, but nonetheless, was good with the sauce, just as the server said it would.

With taxes and tip, the two dishes (+Roti) came out to $28…a bit pricey, but really good food and dining experience. All the servers were really friendly, happy, patient and professional.

I’d definitely like to go back and try more of their dishes!!
