True Confections on Denman

True Confections on UrbanspoonWe arrived around 9:30pm on a Saturday, but it was completely packed and super busy. Even after we sat and ate, there were more and more people waiting at the door to get in. It has a nice interior, but most of the time, can’t see much since it quite dim.

I ordered an African Nectar tea $2.95 to share with Sheepie and got the Tiramisu $7.95 as dessert. Sheepie ordered the Boston Cream Pie $6.95.

I am not too sure of the hype or popularity. I’ve never found their cakes to be that super, and find it extremely expensive for what I get. It was crowded and cramped, our tables pretty much touching the table next to us. The tiramisu was soggy and I didn’t really like it.

Service is hard to get at times because it’s so busy. It’s not friendly or anything either. When we wanted to pay, we noticed that the table next to us (opposite of the table that we were almost touching), the couple left the transaction machine on the table as no one came to retrieve it or say thanks to them. So we picked it up, Sheepie asked one of the staff passing by for the staff code to get in and we did the entire transaction ourselves. Talk about security and safety here.

The lady’s washroom is interesting with pink walls and pink chandeliers.

Overall, I think it’s overated. The only good things about True Confections is that they are open late.

James on Hastings

James on Hastings on UrbanspoonA typical average Chinese restaurant. It was only half full.
We ordered the Shredded Chicken Fried Rice $9.95 which was not too salty. It tasted really good – probably because of MSG…

The Shrimp Wonton & Dumpling with Noodle in Soup $6.50 was pretty good. It was quite tasty and although I was tempted to drink the soup, I stopped myself as I knew there were probably a lot of salt and MSG in it…yeah…I know…but I didn’t want to be thirsty and be drinking tons of water afterwards.

Service was prompt and upbeat. They kept our tea cups full. Two TV screens, on opposite sides of the restaurant. There is parking up front, but limited. Not fancy, but cleaner and more comfortable than say On Lok.

True Confections on Broadway

True Confections on UrbanspoonIt’s a dark cafe, most of the time packed with customers, even late at night. I find the cakes a bit too sweet, and outrageously expensive for the slice. I think it’s better than the one on Denman which seems more cramped, busy, and the service is sub-par. The wallpaper design is cute, and the drinks are good.

Update

It was 10pm on a Friday evening, and it wasn’t a full house this time. The patio looked nice, but I chose to eat inside. I had the Coconut Cream Cake $7.50 with African Nectar Tea $2.95 (Roiboos tea by Mighty Tea). As usual, I find the cakes too sweet for my liking. The only reason why I come here is because Sheepie likes their cakes. I was glad my slice was almost half the size of his. His slice was huge! Price is still ridiculously expensive, considering we have traveled to Europe and Japan in the last 3 years and experience far cheaper cakes that were much better. Here, I either find the sponge cake part to be crumbly, heavy or dry – not my preference. Service was much better this time. The candles on each table at night is a nice touch.

Another Return During Daytime

idearabbit_true-confections_broadway2idearabbit_true-confections_broadway6idearabbit_true-confections_broadway4idearabbit_true-confections_broadway5We returned once again as Sheepie likes True Confection. To our surprise, it was empty except a pair sitting out on the patio. I wondered if they were even open. However, it was only moments before people started rushing in to dine in or take out.

With the place still bare, I got a chance to go up to the counter and look at all the cakes up-close. I ordered the Coconut Cream Pie $7.75 with sponge cake filled with coconut custard and finished with Italian meringue and toasted coconut. Wow… this was just so buttery. It was like I was eating straight from a butter or margarine package. I had a few bites, and I couldn’t keep going. It was the worst coconut cream pie I’ve ever had. Not to mention the most priciest. If it weren’t for Sheepie, I would never return. Next time, I will only be ordering tea! idearabbit_true-confections_broadway1

Sheepie had the Fresh Fruit Cheesecake $7.25 which was just a plain cheesecake topped with seasonal fresh fruits. I had a bite, but it was also super heavy. His coffee was really bitter.

Service was satisfactory and the atmosphere is nice, but the cakes are overpriced and terrible. Sorry…
