Western Lake Chinese Restaurant

Click to add a blog post for Western Lake Chinese Seafood Restaurant on Zomato We had a reservation for 6 people on a Saturday at 7:30pm. The place was jam packed with lineups at the door.

idearabbit-westernlake idearabbit-westernlake2 idearabbit-westernlake7Since my friends had been here several times and were familiar with the menu, we mostly let them decide. I ordered the House Special Chow Mein $14.80. It was a pretty big portion and fair price. It was loaded with veggies and meat. Would I order this dish again? Yes.
The Ling Cod $33.80 (no pic) was good, though I thought it was pretty pricey. Since it was on the other side of the table (without the turning table), I didn’t get to try that much of it. Would I order this dish again? No.

idearabbit-westernlake4Squab $15.80. We had 2 orders of it ($31.60), and it was my first time trying a squab. At the time of serving, I didn’t know that they were young domestic pigeons…(usually under four weeks old). It didn’t have much meat on it, but the flavour was pretty good. For westerners that have grown up with buying meat from the store as just ‘meat’, beware that you will also get the deep fried head of the bird on the plate as well. Would I order this dish again? No.

idearabbit-westernlake6Diced Beef with Mushroom $14.80. This one was really tasty, though quite salty, so goes well with a bowl of rice. It came wrapped up in tinfoil in a shape of a swan. The staff unwrapped it to show steaming hot food inside. Would I order this dish again? Yes.

idearabbit-westernlake3Chef’s Specialty Shredded Chicken $12.80. Decent sized dish. Sheepie was surprised that it was a cold dish. Would I order this dish again? No.
The restaurant was kept well, service was good, though my friends did all the Chinese conversing, so not sure on their English. It was interesting to try different dishes – it’s always nice to go along with friends that know the cuisine well.

Panda Express at Bellis Fair

Panda Express on UrbanspoonA food joint that exists primary because of its existence in the Bellis Fair food court. The food out was not fresh and didn’t really look appetizing. I had a small 1 item to go with Chow Mein (about $3 USD). It has whole grain noodles with shredded onions, celery, cabbage and bean sprouts.
It’s fast food – cheap food. Just to satisfy my empty snack department in my stomach – not my tasting buds.
Most of the staff were friendly or ok. They seem a bit disorganized with food orders and individual tasks.

Toko

Toko on UrbanspoonHidden away on the darker streets away from the bustling street of Cambie with Best Buy, Canadian Tires and Save-Ons, is a quiet restaurant. It’s a narrow restaurant with high ceiling and relaxing atmosphere, specializing in noodles. Yay!

The menu is written in English, Chinese and Japanese, even though there are Thai and Korean cuisine in it as well. You have the option to order your food MSG, so I did.

idearabbit-toko1 idearabbit-toko2idearabbit-toko3We ordered Gyoza $3.50 which were square and not folded and closed completely. Interesting, but tasted good.

idearabbit-toko4I ordered the House Special Chow Mein $9.50. The noodles were crispy and the sauce was really good. My favourite!

idearabbit-toko5Sheepie ordered the Chicken with Ginger and Green Onion $10.75 with a rice bowl $1.45. This was also very delicious. Very soft meat and flavourful sauce.

The server was quick in judging what we wanted before we finished our sentence so we had to repeat to clarify, but she was a good server. I’d return if I get cravings for some Asian cuisine.
