White Spot in Richmond

White Spot on UrbanspoonWe went to meet up with Sheepie’s friend in Richmond. But since we were early, we decided to dine at White Spot – in Richmond. Yeah, I know. With all the great Asian restaurants in Richmond, what am I doing going to a place like White Spot? But meh, I felt like having some Western food, so off we went.

We were greeted by a staff and were taken to our table. I passed a few tables that were left uncleaned. Compared to other White Spots I’ve been, this place seemed a bit more run down, or not organized. There were paper towels scattered on the bathroom floor as well. The restaurant was not fully packed, and I saw enough staff, so I wasn’t sure what was going on.

Our server was friendly, and I ordered the Chicken, Broccoli with rice $11.99. She asked if I wanted brown or white rice and I said ‘brown please’. Unfortunately, it came with white rice instead, but I didn’t complain. We were on a time budget, and I was hungry. It wasn’t like I couldn’t have white rice. I just wanted brown for healthier options.

nut_allery_allery_icon_smallThe salad that came with it did have almonds. That is however a problem. I don’t recall anywhere stating that it had nuts in it. A problem for those who are allergic to nuts! I just avoided the almonds and gave them to Sheepie. The chicken broccoli was in a creamy curry like sauce, and I poured it over the rice. No points for presentation though. But mmm…tastes pretty good. Sheepie ordered the 6 oz Korean Burger with fries $13.99 and Diet Coke $2.99. I had a bit of his fries.

Korean Burger with fries $13.99 – not sure what’s so Korean about this burger…

When we received our bill, our server mentioned that if we did an online survey for tonight’s dining experience, we would get a $5 coupon for our next meal. Of course, there was fine print when I actually did the survey…

*Offer valid for 30 days upon completion of the survey. $5 off coupon valid on your next visit for dine-in only at participating White Spot Restaurants. Minimum purchase of $30 per party of two. Receive $2.50 off for a single diner, with $15 minimum purchase. Not to be combined with any other promotional offer. Excludes alcohol. Limit one coupon per party of two per visit. Limit two survey entries and two coupons per guest per week. Server code ‘$5 Online or $2.50 Online.’

Ok, so I did the survey. Mostly because I wasn’t too happy with the mess and rice mistake. I can’t recall if I mentioned about the almonds and how there should be some notice to dishes that have nuts in them in the survey…

Anyways, I don’t think I’ll return to this specific White Spot in Richmond. I prefer the ones in downtown.

Lizzy’s Diner (formally Nicki’s Diner) in Blaine, Washington

Nicki's Diner on UrbanspoonOpen 7 days a week 11am – 9pm

The restaurant is in the middle of nowhere it seems…but hard to miss with it’s vibrant turquoise exterior colour. It’s the only restaurant on the Peace Portal Drive in that area. No neighbours except some trees. Inside is interestingly decorated in a 1950′s style, from posters, guitars, and red and white checkered table cloths.

The servers are really friendly, chatty and seems down to earth. There wasn’t a whole lot of customers, so the pace was pretty slow, not that we were in a hurry or anything. We had pretty much drove all the way from Vancouver, BC Canada to Blaine (Washington, US) to try out this restaurant that my friend had tried several times and he wanted me to try it out.

The food portions, as with any restaurants in the US as it seems is large. I had fish and chips while my friend had hamburger and fries. His hamburger was gigantic! Wow!
I had a lot of big pieces of fish too. Too many to finish. I’m normally not the type of person that eats ‘fried’ food so it was a bit hard to gobble down. However, the taste was fairly good!

It’s also nice to see that the owner takes time in replying to customer’s review on TripAdvisor  in pretty long replies too! Good for them!

Second Time

When we went there for the second time in Feb 2014, the table cloths had changed to a dark plastic blue. I thought the checkered plastic covering where cheap looking before. Now it’s not just cheap, its got this uncomfortable, unsettling feeling, and reminds me construction sites with blue plastic bags or tents/tarp…

We ordered Chicken Strip Dinner $10.95 to share amongst the two of us. It had 3 deep-fried, large chicken breasts which was crispy – and did I mention large? LOL It came with all-you-can-eat fries which were flat and big – though not wedges. They were hot, right out of the fryer. I had seconds, and by that time, I was pretty full, even though it was only half a dish that I had.

The staff (one lady) is friendly and is a laid back restaurant.

2014 April – Update

Sadly, Nicki’s Diner is no longer called Nicki’s. The sign on the restaurant says it’s still Nicki’s but their menu says it’s Lizzie’s and it was confirmed after talking to the lady that was there last time. The inside is still the same, but luckily, they got rid of their blue plastic table coverings. From what I can tell, the menu is still the same, except the wacky design can make you feel a bit dizzy. There are fake flowers in their flower beds outside of their windows making it feel like it’s always spring or summer.

idearabbit-lizzie6 Nicki’s is now Lizzie’s. Their new menu is wacky, but the content is pretty much the same.idearabbit-lizzie4Yay! They got rid of the cheap garbage tarp looking blue sheets and got table cloth instead!

idearabbit-lizzie5idearabbit-lizzie2Salad $12 – the photo does not do justice to just how huge this thing was!

idearabbit-lizzie1Chicken Strip Dinner idearabbit-lizzie3   Small salad that comes with Chicken Strip Dinner

I ordered the salad $12 and WOW! The dish was humongous! Luckily, it’s a huge dish that’s pretty healthy. I surprised Sheepie and the lady that I finished the entire salad on my own, plus a strip of chicken from Sheepie’s Chicken Strip Dinner (salad, fries and 3 chicken strips).
Eating at Nicki’s or Lizzie’s is now our first stop every time we come across the border to the US lol. It’s become our tradition. I was reluctant at first because their menu seemed really greasy and unhealthy, but now that I now there are some salads (that are quite filling), and good for the price, I don’t mind.

The American CheeseSteak Co

The American CheeseSteak Co. (+ Coney Island Custard) on Urbanspoon

Newly opened up a only a few years ago, my friend invited to join him for some bites. Target audience was hipsters, young adults who enjoyed living in the downtown area (hence being on Davie st), for a different, unique dining experience. I kept thinking or wanting to call the place ‘cheesecake’ even though they don’t have any sweets lol.

The menu didn’t have much of a selection – burgers and fries. But since my friend had gone to other locations of the chain, I left the decision up to him. We tried the $12 New Yorker. After ordering and paying first at the counter, they gave us a number and sat ourselves down. Soon afterward, one of them brought our food to the table.

The flavour was good, but really heavy at the same time. sautéed mushrooms and peppers, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and roasted garlic mayo. For $12 I thought it was really expensive. Anything that doesn’t use utensils to eat, I always expect them to be cheap. Which is why I find Japadogs super expensive at $7 per hotdog.

It was on a quiet Tuesday evening, so it was less than half empty. It had a nice atmosphere, definitely could sit back and chill with your friends or work on you laptop – and blog :P I have seen them invite some local celebrities there with radio stations so it seems like the ‘cool’ place to be.

Service is alright. I’m not a burger and fries person, so unless a friend wants to go there, I’m very likely not going back. I’m also not sold on the price.
