Pinkberry in Ambleside

Pinkberry Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato It reminds me of Yogen Fruz – white clean background with bright fresh colours and with a minimalist look.
There was a small lineup. When it was my turn, the young girl behind the counter looked zoned out – looking out the window, oblivious to her environment. I looked back at Sheepie and shrugged. I waited in front of her as she continued to either ignore me or daydream.
idearabbit-pinkberry4 idearabbit-pinkberry3As soon as power turned back on her, she was a bit of a robot, saying phrases like they were prerecorded. Since it was my first time at Pinkberry, I wasn’t sure of the process and was a bit rushed by her unsympathetic behavior.
idearabbit-pinkberry2I got a Fresh Fruit Bowl (parfait) $4.75 with 130 calories. The menu is simple, but a bit confusing. It would have been nice to have the heading ‘Yogurt Flavours’ at the top. The first ‘flavour’ is green tea, with a photo of a clear glass of green tea. I immediately took that column as a ‘drink’ section and didn’t even think about the rest. The rest seemed to be photos of ‘toppings’, so I didn’t carefully check.
Many of their yogurt keeps nutrition and health in check. Some flavours are non-fat, gluten-free, indicates that it is a good source of calcium with live and active cultures. Some are even dairy-free. Check to see on their website if the flavour you like or want falls into these categories.
None of the topping looked appealing to me – that’s just me, I didn’t want artificial processed stuff (other than the yogurt), so I skipped the sprinkles, nuts (allergic), fruit loops, gummies and so on and moved straight to the fruits. I asked if I could have a bit of each fruit, and she said you usually only get 3 types, but she said she’d give me all, maybe because I didn’t choose any toppings. There were fresh blueberries, chopped up watermelon, strawberries, pineapple, kiwi, and small balls with looked like tapioca.
idearabbit-pinkberry1Sheepie had 1 scoop (small) $5.85 with 3 toppings on an original yogurt. Chocolate flakes, chocolate crisp balls and almonds.
The interior is modern, clean and fresh. Unfortunately, it was Oct, and with the doors open out to the patio, it was pretty chilly inside. Even more after eating the frozen yogurt! Tastes pretty good, fair prices, and lots of selections. I’d advise though, to go during the summer season! Will be back next year when the weather is hot.

O’ Mio Gelato

O' Mio Gelato Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoWhen we arrived, the place was empty. The owner was a super friendly and chatty Italian who said he came to Canada when he was very little. All the gelato are made homemade and he allows to try samples of the ones you’re interested in.
$4 for 1 scoop, though it’s actually two small scoops, and $7 for 2 scoops. 1 scoop was plenty! You have a choice of cone or cup – both the same price. I had the espresso chocolate flake in a cup and my friend had Vanilla salted caramel in a cone.

idearabbit-omiogelato idearabbit-omiogelato2 idearabbit-omiogelato3 idearabbit-omiogelato5 idearabbit-omiogelato6We sat outside on the patio while a father with 2 kids dropped by, then a mother with his son came by. So not busy, but there seems to be a few customers here and there.

idearabbit-omiogelato4As we chatted away, we noticed the next door was a salon shop. The sign said they did ‘feather hair extensions’ and wondered what those were. We were surprised to see the man from the gelato shop go into the closed salon. We then asked if he also owned the salon and started chatting about feather hair extensions.
The gelato doesn’t have a huge selection, but while you’re there, you do feel a sense of community and down-to-earthness, despite not having that many customers. It’s open till 9pm which is incredibly late considering it’s not in downtown, and there aren’t that many traffic in the area.
Go check it out!

Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese Cheesecake

Click to add a blog post for Uncle Tetsu's Japanese Cheesecake on ZomatoMy roommate had just returned from Toronto, and as a souvenir, she had brought me back Uncle Tetsu’ cheesecake. I didn’t know that it was so popular, nor that such place existed. She said that she had to wait in line for nearly 1.5 hours!! Thank you roommate!

So with me having to skip the long line wait, plus the free delivery from TO, I opened the box to see a spongy cake with the Uncle Tetsu’s character baked on top. When I cut out a piece, I could see how soft it was. Now if you’re used to the ‘Western’ style of cheesecake that is dense and sweeter, you may not like the style and flavour.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm!! It just melts in your mouth! Like most Japanese sweets, it’s not that sweet. On the first evening, I ate half of the cheesecake – all by myself. I could have kept going, but I wanted to also share it with Sheepie, so I resisted my temptations, lol.

idearabbit-uncletetsu1 idearabbit-uncletetsu2If there was one in Vancouver, I’d definitely go and buy it for a special occasion. It doesn’t have to be a special day or anything as the 6″ cheesecake isn’t that overly expensive at $8.88 – which is probably another reason for the line ups.

I will check it out the next time I’m in Toronto – though I doubt I’d be patient enough to wait over an hour. I am also curious about the Uncles Tetsu’s Matcha cafe right next door. The matcha ice cream looks delicious too~
