Nothing is really German about this cafe except for the name. Many cafes in Germany were stocked in over abundance with bread, sweets and sandwiches. This place had very little and not all that appealing. I ordered an Apple glazed donut and Chai Latte. The latte was nothing like in Europe. Overly sweet and undrinkable. I felt like I was going to be diabetic. It was more American than anything else. I couldn’t finish even half.
The Christmas tree in the corner was nice.
Service was satisfactory.

Pappa Roti
A clean, modern, and slightly hipsterish cafe on Robson, open till close to midnight every night. My friend suggested I try their infamous coffee bun, so I tagged along to try it out. My friend ordered their special Karak milk tea. He loves it so much he even tried getting the recipe from the staff. Of course they didn’t tell him, lol. I took a sip of it. It was very flavourable, but a tad bit too sweet for me – but that’s probably since I like my tea plain.
I ordered my Coffee bun $3.50 with a Vanilla Rooibos tea.
I liked how the bun came on a wooden tray. The crust was a bit crumbly, hence creating a bit of mess at the table, but the texture and taste was simply delicious. So soft with the right amount of moisture. The tea went very well with it.
Most of the staff seemed quite pleasant, but our cashier wasn’t as much. She didn’t ever smile or seemed welcoming – as if it was a drag to be working there. But other staff were quite pleasant – from the staff that brought out our drinks and buns, as well as the staff that offered to fill up my to-go cup with hot water when I asked her if I could take my half-drunk tea with me. Everything was pretty good! I would definitely return again!
Bubble Waffle
While shopping at Aberdeen mall in Richmond, a friend suggested Sheepie and I try the egg waffles $3.95 each which is an eggy leavened batter cooked between two plates of semi-spherical cells. I ordered the Green Tea, Sheepie naturally had the chocolate, and his friend ordered the cheesecake. Sheepie also ordered a cold Milk Tea $2.
The cashier told us it would be a 10 minute wait, but I think it was closer to 15 minutes. Cashier was friendly despite the long lineup, but the person who was serving the food wasn’t.
I am not sure what kind of ingredients they used for the Green Tea. If they mixed in matcha powder into the egg batter, then they must have used a lot to make it so green. It’s the only reason I can think of that kept me awake till 7am! (yes, I am extremely sensitive to caffeine T_T). Next time, I’ll stick to plain or strawberry…
