Kawawa Ramen

Kawawa Ramen on Urbanspoon

In the busy mall of Metrotown, Kawawa Ramen is right beside Kawawa Japanese Restaurant, it’s main restaurant which serves other Japanese dishes.
The hallway doesn’t get as many traffic as it’s tucked away a bit, but it’s always full whenever I go there. A bit crammed but I guess it’s ok.

I can already tell that it’s not an authentic Japanese ramen-ya from the name. What is Kawawa anyways? Definitely not Japanese. I thought it was hilarious that Monica Urrutia – a food blogger (check out her blog What’s in my mouth?) mentioned that in Filipino, it means ‘pitiful’. LOL.

The service is quick and efficient. Most of the ramen are $7-9, so very affordable. The menu has photos so it’s easy to figure out what you want to order, especially if you’re new to ramen, or the restaurant has come up with their own dishes. The food comes fairly quickly. The ramen and gyoza is decent., so no complaints. But I don’t think I’d ever go there if it was a stand-alone restaurant. I only go there because it’s the only ramen-ya in the mall.

I haven’t had problems with this place, so if you want something other than the food at the food court, this is one option.

Der Beck

Lecker. Leben. Leidenshaft (their tagline: delicious. live. passions)

This became my favourite cafe in Germany!! It like our version of Starbucks but 100% better! It was everywhere you went on the west side of Germany.

I fell in love with latte macchiato. I have been super disappointed that no cafe in Vancouver has Latte macchiato on their menu board. I see Cafe Latte and Caramel macchiato on most menus, but never Latte Machiatto. It’s strange considering that it’s doesn’t contain any ingredients that doesn’t exist here. It’s just the way it’s prepared and the ratio of milk, foam and espresso. One time, I asked Edward from Gutenberg Cafe if he knew, and he didn’t. Me and my German company tried to explain it to him. He took on the challenge, but unfortunately, it was nothing like the real thing – in fact, it was way off. I talked to Blenz, and they seem to have different flavoured macchiatos, again, I was only interested in the real thing – not all this ‘flavour added’ drinks that seem to be the thing here in North America. Same goes for sushi. Anyways, so my search continues.

They have a huge selection of bakery items. They all look very delicious. Definitely better than any bakery you’d find in Vancouver even though that is the ‘norm’ in Germany. I can see why my German company keeps complaining about bread and pastries here in Canada. I knew another European guy who disliked the coffee here – now I know why all the Europeans complain about coffee and pastries here.

Cappuccino

The latte macchiato is warm and creamy. Mmmmmmm!!! The gradation is pretty and an ‘art’ in itself. I don’t take sugar or honey, so you’d think it’s bitter – but it’s not. It’s just perfect the way it is! I love it! :D Any pastry goes very well with the latte macchiato. I usually order non-sugary pastries which are incredibly good.

I sooooooo wish there was Der Beck in Vancouver!

The Lok

On Lok Restaurant & Won-Tun House 安樂麵家 on UrbanspoonInexpensive Chinese restaurant, which is usually only half empty. It’s a fairly spacious restaurant, but it’s sectioned off into front half and back. Always sat in the front section, so not sure what the back is for…

The table and chairs are cheap. One must wonder about the sanitation of the place…I would suggest getting take out if you want food from them. The service isn’t that great, though we weren’t expecting much. The lady was quick and impatient, almost like she was stressed out. The man on the other hand seemed a bit more gentle, but wasn’t sure if he understood English…It was nice however, that 2 other staff came up to us and asked if we had already ordered. But they didn’t seem to have an orderly system to keep things organized.idearabbit_onlok2

idearabbit_onlok1The super cheap menu was only available after 9pm…too early at 6pm…idearabbit_onlok3

Their regular menuidearabbit_onlok5Fried rice $7.30idearabbit_onlok4Curry with rice $7.45

I thought I wouldn’t come back here again after the first time, I felt a bit uneasy. But after a long hike at Lynn Valley Creek, we were both sweaty, in camou clothing and weren’t in the best attire for a fancy restaurant or anything.

The fried rice was a bit too salty for my liking, but really fluffy and delicious with lots of shredded chicken. The curry was good also, but I preferred eating the fried rice over curry. It had good chunks of vegetables and chicken. For the price, the portions are a bargain! Even after the hike and both of us being hungry, we weren’t able to finish both plates. We ended up getting a doggie bag.

I wouldn’t mind getting take out from this place…not so much to dine in.
