Strike

Strike 破店 (Vancouver) on UrbanspoonSheepie and I wanted to go to Green Leaf Sushi, but when we arrived, we realized that it was Sunday, and they were closed on Sundays. Since we were in the area, we decided to go to the nearby Sake Maki. To our disappointment, it was also closed, but for renovations! So then, we decided to check out the next door restaurant called Strike since we had seen many people go in while we were dining last time at Sake Maki.

It was crowded and busy, but we were lucky to get a table right away.

First of all, as a designer, I must say that I don’t like their logo. There is too many tension in the logo…the kerning isn’t right, the use of vector shape isn’t properly done, use of stroke and width and the use of space. Sorry. I know it’s just a restaurant, but sometimes, the logo can say what the food quality can be like.

Wonton Noodle Soup $7.50

I ordered the Wonton Noodle Soup $7.50 and Sheepie had the Teriyaki Chicken Steak Rice Combo $8.75. My soup was very bland and there were fat chunks in the wontons  – blah…I don’t like fatty meat. Bad for you, and means they’re using cheap meat.

Service was mediocre. Nothing super bad to mention, but nothing great to mention either. I was disappointed in the food. Not sure if I ordered the wrong thing. I tried a bit of Sheepie’s dish, but it was meh, nothing special…it filled our stomachs but not our wish to come back.

I’m willing to go back if someone knows the restaurant well and they can recommend me some good dishes. Otherwise, there are tons of other restaurants out there waiting to be tried.

Take Five Cafe on Granville

Take Five Cafe on UrbanspoonI was meeting up with a friend at Take Five. I’ve had their drinks several times, but this was the first time that it came in a to-go cup even though I was staying at the cafe. My friend who later came 15 minutes later also had hers in a paper cup. I wondered if this was something new. I like drinking out of real ceramic mugs – just makes the drink taste better, and I hate throwing out so many coffee cups with plastic lids! Anyways, I had a African Autumn Tea(caffeine free) latte $3.50 (incl. tax).

I was also craving another crepe after trying some at Cafe Crepe, so I ordered the same thing, Sugar Butter Crepe with additional whip cream $5.46 (incl. tax) Unlike Cafe Crepe, which had a ‘matte’ look to it’s surface, this crepe was shiny. I knew right away that it was going to be oily, and it was. It was too buttery, and didn’t go down as fast as at Cafe Crepe’s. It also seemed very chewy and a bit rubbery. I didn’t really like it, so I think I wont be ordering crepes from there again…

This location is a pretty spacious and big cafe for a downtown location on Granville. There are a variety of seats ranging from couches, square tables, round tables, and counters by the window. The lady doing the cashier and barista – well, pretty much everything was friendly and nice. She brought over the the crepe to my table when it was made.

Ichimi Sushi at Brentwood Mall

Ichimi Sushi on Urbanspoon

One of the many places that survives, possibly because there are businesses around and workers come by for food during lunch hours.
I’ve been there several times, but it’s always extremely slow service for a fast food court. There’s only one guy making all the orders…so no wonder…It’s not the best choice for those who needs to grab a quick lunch during their break from work.

For this review, I got the $5.35 Combo A which had 3 tuna rolls, 3 kappa and 8 California rolls. For the price where you can have an entire big bento box/meal at Momo Sushi, it’s a bit pricey. The sushi can fluctuate from being ok, to meh…The California roll has something extra added…can’t tell what is it though..makes it a bit more sweet? butter? more mayo?

Service depends on who is working at that time. One girl will never smile and look worn out. The newer girl seems a bit more enthusiastic and chit chats with customers if the lineup is gone. The older woman, looks harsh and will never smile either.

I do notice that sometimes when I have the Negitoro roll, they do use good fresh seaweed, which really adds flavour.idearabbit_ichimisushi1
