La Lasita Tacos

La Casita Tacos on UrbanspoonNicely decorated and casual Mexican restaurant on Robson. Sheepie and I ordered the 4 tacos for $10 deal. You can select four different types from the ‘Tacos’ category. We got the Baja Fish, Al Pastor, Beef Carne Asada Con Rajas and Chicken Mole.

To our surprise, each taco was small, about 10 cm in diameter, size of dumplings.

The Baja Fish has a refreshing coleslaw salad with pacific cod in a Mexican beer batter. The fish was really soft and tasty.

The Chicken Mole was with white and dark chicken seasoned with onion, salt pepper and oregano. I didn’t think of it too much. Meh…

The Beef Carne Asada con Rajas had grilled beef sirloin with poblano peppers and onions. It had a garlic, spicy flavour that was pretty good, but the beef was really chewy.

Al Pastor had pork and onions marinated in achiote and grilled, topped with pineapple. The port was hard and difficult to eat.

Since we shared the four small tacos amongst the two of us, Sheepie was still quite hungry. He got a Mushroom & Onion Quesadillas $3.50. Again, it was really small and not much to eat. I didn’t have any.

They have a free topping bar where you can top off your tacos with your favourite toppings. Looks like it’s been sitting there all day out in the open…They also had heated beans which didn’t look to appetizing were slightly spicy and surprisingly alright, but had to ask the staff for a bowl.

It’s a good chilling restaurant, but I found the prices to be expensive for the amount and quality. I’m surprised with all the good reviews – maybe it was just a bad day? However, it wont be my return-to-restaurant for Mexican food

Gesamt Kunst Werk

Perhaps you had seen the lit letters of GESAMT KUNST WERK when you crossed Granville Bridge and wondered what it was all about. Well, the cityline is going to change after this project.

Gesamt Kunst Werk. In German, that means a total work of art. The sale centre is gone now, but I had the opportunity to check it out on the last day before its closure.

It’s been a 7 years of design work and continuing process of this sculpture masterpiece. There is also the controversial major installation of a Spinning Chandelier by Rodney Graham under Granville Bridge.

The sales centre wasn’t your typical glamourous, fancy ones. It was raw and authentic like you had just been invited into the design office of where the project is being developed. The walls are covered by different options, renderings, tables with miniature mockups of the process and endless booklets of all the details of the building and community.

There was a gentleman who was quite upset and complained about the photos being taken by 3 cameras in the centre. They were positioned at ceiling height and automatically took photos every few seconds. The staff said they were going to be using them for a time lapse video later on, though that didn’t convince the man who didn’t like the idea his photos were being taken (and perhaps used later on) without his consent.

Put that incident aside, it looks like the area is going to be getting quite a facelift to what it is now.

I was intrigued to find a locked up old gas station which in no doubt will be bulldozed for the project. After finding the blog on Gunkanjima, I’ve been fascinated with towns or communities that were completely abandoned, left sometimes in good condition, as if everyone suddenly left overnight. It makes me think of the people that walked through there, worked there and had their lives there. However, unless it’s had some significant historical influence, it almost usually gets bulldozed and built with something new for the future.

I do worry about the increasing living density in downtown. Not just this project, but with so many condos to be still built, I wonder what the city is going to do about the traffic and parking problem. Of course the cost of rent and to own is also very difficult. It will be interesting to see how things develop in this area.

Schwarzes Cafe in Berlin, Germany

idearabbit-schwarzescafeApparently Sheepie loves this cafe and he wanted me to check it out. The cafe is open 24 hours and we got there late at night. It was jam packed and we sat upstairs.  Seats covered with ductape, the place seemed to be run down and servers looked very hipster-ish, but on the rougher side. The female washroom had a open heart window in between the stalls. I guess if you’re into sort of that thing, you’d like it, but it wasn’t for me. We only had drinks so can’t really comment on the food. I have seen photos and reviews which contradicts my impression of this place. Perhaps I need to go back for another chance?
