Fortune City Seafood Restaurant Special for Everyone

Fortune City Seafood Restaurant Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoWow, I must say that the name already catches my attention. So long, yet so vague, it’s hilarious.

Our company went for lunch on a Friday. Tea is free on weekdays (80 cents per person on weekends) and you also get 10% off – so good incentives to go on a weekday!

The place is fairly large, but it was packed! We waited for about 10 minutes. When it was our turn, the hostess just pointed to the back of the restaurant and we wandered ourselves there to find two empty tables. One was for a larger group, so we took the smaller one for four of us. It was not set, and we wondered why we didn’t get seated at another small table that was already set.

We pulled the table out a bit since the round table was right against the wall. My boss sat down first and the server came and pushed the table back, imprisoning my boss against her chair like a little child so they wouldn’t move. He clanked and threw the plates, cups and bowls around like he was furious. No wonder they make those things so thick. They’d have to be unbreakable.

We ordered 8 dishes.
Stir Fried Bean Tips $7.95: it had a garlic flavour, refreshing veggie and good amount of salt. I really liked this dish, but then again, I’m a huge veggie fan :P

Deep Fried Egg Tofu $6.25: Hmm…deep fried….all those eggs…can’t be all too healthy…lol. It was my first time trying this dish, and I quite enjoyed it. It was interesting texture. Crispy on the outside, but super smooth inside. I’m not sure what was sprinkled on top of them. It looked nutty so I brushed them off. This dish must be consumed while it’s hot, otherwise, it’s not yummy.

BBQ Duck Spaghetti $6.95: This was my least favourite dish. The noodles and soup were bland, and not the kind of noodles I like. Didn’t have much of the duck though I realize that is the star of the dish.

Pork/Shrimp Crystal Noodle $12.80: Another first time trying such noodles. The flavour was good, though the shortness and oiliness of the noodles made it really difficult to eat with chopsticks hence could explain why there were so much of it left over. It was a good try, but I now know, I like my noodles to be long.

We had two types of dumplings, Shrimp $4.50 (4 large pieces) pictured above and Pork $4.50 (4 large pieces). Both were steamy hot, really tasty and filling!

idearabbit-fortuneseafood6Fish Paste Rice Roll $4.50 was also very interesting with the different textures of the smooth rice roll, to the deep fried fish paste inside.

The four of us couldn’t finish all of it, but did a pretty good job. The rest, we had it to go.

The service wasn’t all the great. It was rude for the most part, and our male server was quite demanding like “Sit”, or “Wait” in a stern almost police like attitude. No smiles here.

Service gets no points, but the food was ok. I liked the Bean Tips and the Fried Egg was a new dish that was surprising. I think I still prefer Happy Valley instead.

Finch’s Tea & Coffee House

Finch's Tea & Coffee House on UrbanspoonI met up with a friend for coffee and wanted to check out Finch’s, so we did. I had read so many good reviews, so I was looking forward to finally come here.

A hipster-ish, grundgy looking cafe where the walls are falling apart (my friend and I think intentionally), though not too sure about all the wallpaper peeling from the ceiling. The tables and chairs are kind of random and scratched up spoons and tea cups like they were gathered from different yard sales.

The cashier wasn’t friendly, made no effort in making eye contact, nor said any thank you after payment. We first sat by the window facing south. But it was really hot on a summer day, so after some tables cleared, we moved to a table by the window facing West. It was cooler and more spacious, but the music was really loud in that corner, making it extremely hard to converse with my friend. The tea was good (don’t know how tea can go too wrong…) and the scone was good. As more tables cleared, the staff came by to take our plates. The guy just took my tea even though there were some left without asking. I thought that was so rude.

I know these hip, rough places are ‘in’ and ‘trendy’ right now, but I have never gotten into them. I was relieved to find out my friend had the exact same taste – I guess that’s why we’re friends :P .

The cafe is always jam packed with every table taken and people lining up for take out. Wow! Which is why I thought it was good. But to my disappointment, it didn’t live up to our expectations. I’ve read that their sandwiches are good. I wouldn’t mind trying, though I’d take out if I did. But thinking of having to deal with the staff is a turn off. With so many great cafes in downtown, I don’t think I will be returning!

TCBY

TCBY on UrbanspoonLocated right by the waters of Millennium Park in West Vancouver, this small ice cream shop was a nice treat after a light hike in Lynn Valley with a bunch of friends. They have several ice cream selections plus frozen yogurt  in a cup for about $3.50 Topping are 45 cents each. I got the vanilla frozen yogurt with chocolate sprinkles.

It melted quite fast was not as dense and textured as the frozen yogurt I recall enjoying from Yogen Fruz.

We walked over to waters to enjoy the sun and water as we indulged. However, we and many others watched as the seagulls and crows tried to intimidate a Bald Eagle, presumably protecting her nest at the very top of the tree. Being a parent must already be tough, but to have 15 birds swooping down at your head as you duck and scream at them for an hour must be stressful…

Um! Ok, back to TCBY. So the yogurt was ok, though it didn’t wow me. It’s been a while since I’ve had Yogen Fruz, which I recall to be more richer…but that was like 4 years ago, way before my blogging time :P This can only mean, time to test it again! :) Would I still come back to TCBY? I guess so, but since I don’t get to come to this neighbourhood often, I’d likely want to try out something new on the next visit.
