Moii Cafe in Downtown

Second location of Moii Cafe opened up in downtown, and so I decided to meetup with my friend for tea at the cafe.

The cafe is right on the corner of West Pender and Richards. It’s pretty small, and there was only one guy at a table when we arrived around 4pm on a holiday. Soon afterward, he left, and we were the only ones there without anybody else coming in – even for takeout.

There were two staff, and one who took my order was nice and friendly. After having a heavy lunch, I just needed a light, refreshing tea, so I got the African Nectar Rooibos teabag.

It had nice furniture, a bit of hipsterish feel. One unfortunate thing is that they don’t have a bathroom! So better not sit around and chit chat while drinking tea or coffee.

If I return, next time will be for desserts.

Ma Dang Goul

The place was jam packed and lively. My friend had suggested the place as she was into Korean cuisine at the time. My other friend was also into it, so two friends, Sheepie and I went. There was about 5 minute wait at the door.

No water arrived until we asked for some. It was quite crowded.

5 different side dishes of banchan. Salad was meh… Not much of a fan of the jelly squares.

Doeji Bulgoki $11.95 The portion was small, but good! Went really well with plain rice.

Chicken Bibim Bap $13.95 Nice presentation, nice and hot, really good! Fresh toppings.

My friend had a Lemon Soju $9.95 which came out in a really pretty glass bottle with ice in the middle. Everyone was fascinated by it.

Jjin Mandu $9.95 Presented nicely. Really good! I recommend!

Mul Neang Myeon $9.95. Cold noodles had an interesting texture and really light flavour, but good. Awesome for the summer.

Good food and fair prices. Will return.

Earls on Hornby

The three of us sat in the C-shaped booth on Chinese New Day for a late lunch. The restaurant was spacious with modern decor.

I was impressed that all the cutlery were engraved with the Earl’s ‘e’ on the handle. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Caesar $15. You had an option of choosing cajun or hot garlic chicken. I chose cajun. I was quite surprised with the size. It came on a large plate, though mostly all romaine. The leafy greens were fresh and crisp. There were a couple of croutons. I like the shredded cheese that blanketed the leafs like snow. The dressing was really good. The chicken were a bit burnt, but flavourful. The bread was crumbly and dry. I’m not a fan of bread, though I do love most complimentary buns that come out at finer restaurants at the beginning. I was also already full when I had finished the salad and chicken, so I only had a bite from the bread.

Service was satisfactory and the price was fair. The restaurant was clean and laid back. Washrooms are on the second floor.
