Ma Dang Goul

MDG Ma Dang Goul Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoThe place was jam packed and lively. My friend had suggested the place as she was into Korean cuisine at the time. My other friend was also into it, so two friends, Sheepie and I went. There was about 5 minute wait at the door.

No water arrived until we asked for some. It was quite crowded. idearabbit-madanggoul1 idearabbit-madanggoul3 idearabbit-madanggoul2

idearabbit-madanggoul65 different side dishes of banchan. Salad was meh… Not much of a fan of the jelly squares.

idearabbit-madanggoul8 Doeji Bulgoki $11.95 The portion was small, but good! Went really well with plain rice. idearabbit-madanggoul5

Chicken Bibim Bap $13.95 Nice presentation, nice and hot, really good! Fresh toppings. idearabbit-madanggoul4

My friend had a Lemon Soju $9.95 which came out in a really pretty glass bottle with ice in the middle. Everyone was fascinated by it. idearabbit-madanggoul7

Jjin Mandu $9.95 Presented nicely. Really good! I recommend! idearabbit-madanggoul9

Mul Neang Myeon $9.95. Cold noodles had an interesting texture and really light flavour, but good. Awesome for the summer.

Good food and fair prices. Will return.

Sura Korean Cuisine Restaurant Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoI’ve heard good reviews, and seen always a lineup when passing by. The last time we tried to get it, it was a 40 minute wait, so we went elsewhere. But this time, my friend wanted to host his birthday dinner there, and since they didn’t take any reservations, we decided to sit it out.
The decor was much nicer than other Korean restaurants which sometimes looked like a hole in the wall. The settings were nice. Candles were lit inside glass measuring cups. The place is super packed and lively.

idearabbit-sura6 idearabbit-sura7idearabbit-sura1Ban chan was the regular kimchi, seaweed and Asian pumpkin which was different and quite tasty. Birthday boy really like that, he had the second serving all to himself.
One of the guests knew the staff that worked there, so he asked for recommendations.

idearabbit-sura4Kimichi Fried Rice $15. Nicely presented. A bit spicy for me (not to eat, but my tummy is sensitive), so although it was good, I had very little of it. 4/5

idearabbit-sura3Seafood Pancake $20 Nice and hot. Very tasty and filling. Generous amount of seafood, particularly octopus. 4/5

idearabbit-sura5Royal Galbi $28. Super tender. Excellent sauce (would go great with rice). A lot of us liked this one. I’m not much of a meat eater, but this one was good! 5/5

idearabbit-sura2Bulgogi I was busy eating all the other dishes, and since not all the dishes were readily available in front of me, this one was the least one I had. Still good flavour and lots of different ingredients to enjoy. 4/5
Service was satisfactory. The food was very good and presented with care. Would like to go back, but I’m not a huge fan of lining up…though it is worth it. Wouldn’t mind checking out the Richmond one!

Akasaka Japanese Restaurant on Urbanspoon

A fairly large and spacious Japanese restaurant run by Koreans in Surrey. Half of the restaurant has private tatami rooms, with even closing doors. We were there on a Sunday evening, and only the private rooms were occupied. The private ridea-rabbit_mascot-angryoom was very nice, and with the sliding door, we were able to shut out the noise and cold draft from the hallway. Unfortunately, unlike in Japan, the servers did not even make the effort to close it after they brought us tea or food, making it a little annoying for us to close it every single time, and eventually leaving it two-thirds of the way open.

The rooms were run down. The Asian artwork on the wall was ripped and had a hole as if someone had punched through it. The wall itself looked like it had gone through some war time. It was in serious need of renovation and upgrading.idearabbit_akasaka1

Nice try on decorating, but rips and holes in the art? Better not to have it up in the first place if it is that damaged.idearabbit_akasaka3

Tuna Tataki (small) $7.95idearabbit_akasaka5

Negitoro roll $3.95

I ordered the negitoro roll $3.95, Scallop+Shrimp skewer $5.95 and Tuna Tataki (small) $7.95. The food came promptly except for one person’s bento box which took quite a long time. The negitoro was good. Scallop and shrimp was nice and juicy. The tuna tataki was ok. I think I’ve had better ones at Green Leaf for the same price. Could have used a bit more zest flavour in the ponzu. But overall, my food was satisfactory. I tried a bit of Sheepie’s Gangnam Style Chicken which was chicken enrobed in kimchi and a lot of oil. Kind of like those Chinese deep fried chicken with red sauce, but spicy. It was alright, but a bit greasy for me. Sheepie had the Viking roll, but he didn’t like how there was so much cream cheese inside. I didn’t try.

Service in terms of bringing food, tea and friendliness was satisfactory. Presentation of food was normal, prices were a bit high for the quantity and quality, but the taste was good enough to satisfy my dining experience. It’s a bit far to come all the way down to Surrey from downtown to dine, especially with all the good sushi restaurants in Vancouver area. But if you live in Surrey, or happen to be in that area, it’s an ok Japanese restaurant to check out.
