Jong Ga Korean Restaurant

Jong Ga Korean Restaurant Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoOur boss and three of us were in the area for a project. Afterwards, we decided to have some Korean for lunch, so we dropped into Jong Ga Jip. The restaurant is really simple and nothing really that stands out, decor, and furniture wise from other similar Korean restaurants. We started off with 4 banchan dishes.

idearabbit_jonggajip1idearabbit_jonggajip2 One who’s never had Korean food ordered Jab Chae $16.50. It looked pretty good, though I felt it was a bit pricey.

I ordered the Seolleongtang $9.99 which is a Korean broth tang (soup) made from ox bones (mostly leg bones), brisket and other cuts. I didn’t know what it was at the time, so I didn’t know that the seasoning is generally done by the person who’s eating it, according to his/her personal taste by adding salt, ground black pepper, red pepper, minced garlic, or chopped spring onions. There weren’t garlic or onions, but I did add in some kimchi from the banchan. I thought it was a really bland soup! Awesome that it came with noodles in the broth, with a huge bowl of rice! It was quite filling. Because I didn’t know that you were supposed to at flavour, I was kind of disappointed.

My boss ordered the Sun Du Bu $10.99 which did have much more flavour, so I did take some of her broth and added in mine. She could barely finish much of her rice, but her broth was good.

idearabbit_jonggajip5 My co-worker had the Ddukbaegi bulgogi $11.99 His was also flavourful.

Service was ok. Atmosphere was ok. Getting a big bowl of rice in a ceramic bowl is bonus. To be fair, I think I would need to give this another try as my failure to know what I was ordering had resulted in what I wasn’t expecting.

Insadong Korean BBQ

Insadong Korean BBQ Seafood Restaurant Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoMy friend suggested this place after a game of bowling at Holdom. I left the orders up to her and another friend.

Our male server was expressionless and was super rude. My friend who wanted to come here looked offended. Midway through, it changed to a girl who was much better.

idearabbit-insadong12 idearabbit-insadong11Seafood pancake $12.99 It was alright. Fluffy but a bit bland, even with all the sauce poured onto it.
idearabbit-insadong9 idearabbit-insadong10Marinated Sliced Rib-Eye. These were grilled first along with mushroom. These were pretty good. Most of the meat stayed in tack and it went well wrapped in the leafy greens.

Spicy Pork Bulgogi $14.99 The meat from this pile were all crumbly and small, making it a bit difficult to grill and pick up. There was one thick slice of onions for all 6 of us to share.
idearabbit-insadong13Grilled Mackerel with Soybean Soup $13.99 The mackerel was well done. Super soft, juicy and lots of meat.

idearabbit-insadong8The soup was not really my favourite. It did remind of miso soup, but somehow, I didn’t really like the taste. Was it too watered down? It seemed like a leftover for some reason.

The woman at the cashier was much more pleasant as we paid our way out.

Sura

Sura Korean Cuisine Restaurant Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoI’ve heard good reviews, and seen always a lineup when passing by. The last time we tried to get it, it was a 40 minute wait, so we went elsewhere. But this time, my friend wanted to host his birthday dinner there, and since they didn’t take any reservations, we decided to sit it out.
The decor was much nicer than other Korean restaurants which sometimes looked like a hole in the wall. The settings were nice. Candles were lit inside glass measuring cups. The place is super packed and lively.

idearabbit-sura6 idearabbit-sura7idearabbit-sura1Ban chan was the regular kimchi, seaweed and Asian pumpkin which was different and quite tasty. Birthday boy really like that, he had the second serving all to himself.
One of the guests knew the staff that worked there, so he asked for recommendations.

idearabbit-sura4Kimichi Fried Rice $15. Nicely presented. A bit spicy for me (not to eat, but my tummy is sensitive), so although it was good, I had very little of it. 4/5

idearabbit-sura3Seafood Pancake $20 Nice and hot. Very tasty and filling. Generous amount of seafood, particularly octopus. 4/5

idearabbit-sura5Royal Galbi $28. Super tender. Excellent sauce (would go great with rice). A lot of us liked this one. I’m not much of a meat eater, but this one was good! 5/5

idearabbit-sura2Bulgogi I was busy eating all the other dishes, and since not all the dishes were readily available in front of me, this one was the least one I had. Still good flavour and lots of different ingredients to enjoy. 4/5
Service was satisfactory. The food was very good and presented with care. Would like to go back, but I’m not a huge fan of lining up…though it is worth it. Wouldn’t mind checking out the Richmond one!
