JJ Beans in Mt. Pleasant

JJ Bean on UrbanspoonA new JJ Bean was opening up in the Olympic Village area, so I wanted to check it out. The postcards said that there were giving out freebies, esp cupcakes. We had a slow start to our day on the cold drizzling day, so we didn’t get there until 3pm. To our disappointment, all the freebies were gone. We ordered a cafe latte $3.50 and cookie $2.33. The latte was super small, compared to other small size drinks at other coffee shops but still charging the same amount. It was super bitter, and although I do like bitter, this was way too bitter, and I had to add some honey. The cookie seemed like it had nuts, so I didn’t have any.

The decor is modern and slick. Not as cosy as a Starbucks atmosphere, but still enjoyable. The small coffee table looked like a industrial cable spindle. Creative if that were the case. The neighbourhood seemed really nice – quiet, clean and modern. It lacks a bit of liveliness compared to downtown, but if you prefer the quiet over crowds, then this would be great for you.

I didn’t like their latte (though perhaps I need to go back to give it another try? Drinks can come out really different depending on the barista…) I do love their cup design (see my old post with pics).

Caffe Vibrato

Caffe Vibrato on UrbanspoonAfter eating at Kum Ki Wa, we went over to Caffe Vibrato in the Coquitlam Zone Entertainment Complex so that I could get a latte. The cafe was very spacious and clean. One section seemed like there were books so that you can sit down to enjoy some free reads. Another had lounge chairs in front of bright red walls and laminate wood flooring. The decor was really nice, well kept and open area.

The staff were very friendly, and I ordered a latte $3 to go. It was really good and satisfying. Much better than drinks at Starbucks. I am curious to know why the next door bubble tea place was packed with people while this one was completely empty.

I really liked their drink and the price was reasonable. Thumbs up!

Caffè Artigiano on Hornby

Caffè Artigiano on Urbanspoon

A nice cafe across the Vancouver Art Gallery. Despite the busy traffic of Robson and Hornby, the cafe was pretty empty when I arrived on a Saturday around noon.
I was greeted by a friendly cashier, and I ordered a Cafe Latte $4+. He asked if I wanted vanilla, caramel or hazelnut and I replied vanilla. I also ordered the already made Ham+Cheese Croissant $5+. I was asked if I’d like it grilled, and I answered yes. I got a number and they told me they would bring out the food to the table when it’s ready.

The latte art was very beautifully done. Even my friend that arrived shortly after noticed and commented. The cup was nice too, even branded with their name. I prefer having my drinks in a real mug/cup than disposable ones if I’m staying at the cafe. I found the vanilla to be a bit too sweet, so next time, I want to see if I can get it without any flavours – simple and natural.
The croissant was pretty good, though a bit pricey  for just ham and cheese. Though I guess $4+ for a small latte is pretty expensive, but I guess our culture and Starbucks has adopted that as being ‘normal’.

Very good cafe latte $4+

The cafe has a nice atmosphere and small patio in front. The station is fully equipped with napkins, cream, glasses for water, etc. The staff are friendly, and the place is kept clean.
