Connie’s Cook House

Click to add a blog post for Connie's Cook House on ZomatoWe were looking for a place to dine for dinner, but it seemed like everywhere on 4th Ave was really busy. We stumbled upon Connie’s and Sheepie suggested we try, even though it was pretty empty, except 3 diners.

The interior was colourful with yellow checkered table cloths along with metal, iron looking chairs. We ordered the House Special Chow Mein $10.95 and Kung-Po Chicken with Peanuts (hot) $11.25. The food arrived promptly.

The Kung-po was topped with deep fried cashew nuts. The sauce was really salty and heavy in soy sauce, so that must be the reason why the server asked if we wanted rice. But since we had the noodles, we had declined. The baby corn (my favourite) had an odd ‘off’ taste – not fresh…though they were likely from cans, so I guess not fresh, but nonetheless, I avoided them after trying 2 bad ones. Portion was pretty good.

The noodles on the other hand was really bland. Chicken were tender, but was wary on trying any of the seafood after the bad fortune with the baby corn. I was skeptical of their ‘freshness’ of the food. The noodles were crunchy and there was plenty of sauce. We mixed the Kung-po and this dish to ‘balance’ out the saltiness. Portion was decent with lots of veggies, chicken and seafood.

Service was satisfactory. Food was ok, but not enough for me to actually make effort to come back for.

QQ Sushi

Click to add a blog post for Q Q Sushi on ZomatoI decided to try out this Chinese-run sushi place only because it was close to my office. Sheepie had stopped going to it many years ago because of it’s poor quality and service.

I called them up so that I could take out without having to wait for my order during my short lunch break. The phone call was rude. I said I would like to take out the Box A. The lady said ok, and hung up. What the?

idearabbit-qqsushi1 When I got there there were only 2 tables occupied during the lunch hour. I know that Suika a block down was packed with lineups. It’s right on Broadway with other offices around, so it’s definitely not a bad location. However, there were 3 take-out customers in front of me, waiting at the till. They seemed unhappy, and one woman who made her transaction was waiting for the staff to give her the receipt, but seeing that the lady staff was busy and didn’t care – not even a thank you or anything, she waved with a ‘whatever’ gesture as the other customer smiled at her with a ‘yeah, don’t bother’ look.

The lady staff never smiled, in fact, she looked like she was at serving in a prison, ready to yell at anybody if they complained.

Everything was exposed, so I saw how the staff were preparing. There were 2 other men, one of whom was in charge of the sushi, while the other was busy with the other food and also picking up the phone. I saw several huge trays of already fried tempura, just sitting there out in the open. idearabbit-qqsushi2

The Box A $7.60 came with Chicken Teriyaki on rice, salad, miso soup, 6 piece California rolls and tempura. The tempura was of course not fresh. Slightly fried too much. The rice was a bit hard…Cali was ok. Salad was meh…some of the edges of the lettuce were brown…chicken teriyaki was hard.

Service was TERRIBLE. A disgrace. Food quality was poor. Will never return.

Saigon Venture

Click to add a blog post for Saigon Venture on Zomato I phoned earlier for take out of the Beef Ball Noodle in Soup (small). As I entered to pick up, I was immersed into a gassy, smoky and stuffy tiny hole in the wall restaurant. There were only about 4 tables and 2 were occupied by a family and a single woman.
The young girl who worked there did the cashier, phones, taking orders from diners and help prepare the food. There’s probably a cook in the back, but I couldn’t see.
My order came out to be exactly $7 with tax. Since she was so busy, she had left the till. There was no thank-you or good bye. When I saw my credit card go through, I left.

idearabbit-saigonventure1 idearabbit-saigonventure2The small portion was not enough for me, so it’ll have to be a large next time, if I return. She had asked me if I wanted the broth and noodles separately or in the same bowl, and I had said the same is fine. It was ok, but I found that there wasn’t enough broth…so keep it separate next time! idearabbit-saigonventure3
Food wise was very good and tasty. Not too salty. Things were fresh and packaged well. There were 2 fortune cookies, only which one of them had a message :)
