Zac Zac Japanese Curry

Click to add a blog post for ZAC.ZAC Japanese Curry House on Zomato The only Japanese food booth at Hmart, way at the back, tucked away from view. Their photo menus look a lot more appetizing than the Korean food booths, and I was craving for some Japanese, so I decided to get the Curry Udon $8.25. There are a great selection, though the price is a bit high for fast food, but then again, they are located right on Robson and Seymour.
Service was prompt and satisfactory. The dish felt like it was a smaller portion in that I was still craving for more food after I was done. But good fast food booth.

Kojima Sushi

Click to add a blog post for Kojima Sushi on ZomatoOnce in a while, we return to these cheaper Chinese run sushi restaurants. It feels a bit run-down…but if you’re into the “cheap but more quantity with less quality”, then this is another jackpot for you. We happen to drive by the area on a Friday evening. It was half full.

I ordered Combo B $8.95 which comes with a bowl of udon, 4 pieces of tempura, 4 pieces of yam rolls and 4 avocado rolls.

idearabbit-kojimaYes, I love the price, but I’ve slowly been spoiled by better quality, atmosphere and everything of places that offer more (of course for a bit more $$)…lol and my pet peeve of having food served on plastic ruins the food. However, the food was pretty good.

Sheepie ordered the Mix Combo A with spicy tuna roll $10.95. Compared to my combo, he was a bit disappointed that his portion was a lot smaller, but then again, he did have raw fish.
Service was really good as they kept filling our cups with tea. For a meal that wont hurt your wallet, this place has some good selections of combos.

Hwa Sa Rang

Hwasarang on UrbanspoonSo a while back, I had noticed that Momo Sushi on Denman had closed down. Then, I saw a new ad in the newspaper with a 15% discount for dine-in so we decided to check it out when we realized that the address was the same as the old Momo location.

The place had been renovated, and the space opened up, though I’m not sure if it was a good idea. Yes, it opened the space, but the winter winds kept blowing into the restaurant as customers came in and left. Sheepie didn’t like the draft so much that he moved to another table.idearabbit-hwasarang idearabbit-hwasarang2I recall a lit up tree before, but now it was a cherry blossom tree. The tables were painted black, but not professionally, as the paint was already chipping off and made the table look already used and old. idearabbit-hwasarang3 idearabbit-hwasarang4 Their menu was extensive and was a bit higher than Momo was. It did look quite familiar (design wise and such) with Momo. But overall, it looked like a step-up.
idearabbit-hwasarang5 idearabbit-hwasarang6I ordered the Tempura Udon $9.50 and an Agedashi Tofu (traditional) to share $4.00. Sheepie ordered the HSR Combo $10.00

The Udon portion was pretty good and it’s always nice to have the tempura on the side as some people prefer them to eat them crispy with the tempura sauce that it is served with. When it’s separate, I tend to put in one shrimp and one veggie into the udon bowl. The oil from the tempura adds flavour to the subtle broth. The others, I eat as tempuras. One note: if there is broccoli in your udon or ramen – it’s not authentic Japanese! LOL. But whether the dish tastes good or not is the more important factor ;)

Sheepie was super disappointed with his combo (unfortunately, neither of us took a photo of it). I didn’t think it was that bad (appearance wise). It was good portion and compared to other combos elsewhere, it seemed the same. I tried one of his Salmon nigiri, and it was a bit stringy though. He complained about the presentation and the taste. He said the staff were all dressed in black in a black restaurant, making it feel like a ‘grave’. I didn’t feel the same kind of hostility that he did and wasn’t turned off by all the darkness.

Sheepie said he wont be returning, and again, I didn’t find it terrible as he had. I liked that they served in ceramic bowls and plates rather than the cheap plastic stuff. The sushi comes with a ton of wasabi and gari for those who love them.

After my review on Momo where I had food poisoning, I saw more negative reviews about it afterwards. The receipt still says Ja Galchi- which was what the receipt said when it was for Momo. So same owner/business, but different face? Is it just a re-branding step to ‘start over’ clean? But now with a name that’s difficult to remember, and so many other options in the neighbourhood, I don’t think I’ll be back anytime soon. If it’s still the same business, it could still be running the same way, and I don’t want another food poisoning again! Or rather for a third time from Momo! (had another bad experience from the one on Bidwell) So why risk it?
