Bonchaz on Main

Bonchaz Bakery Cafe Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoA narrow cafe on the corner of Broadway and Main St. I had a yoga class after work, and got to the studio early. I was super hungry, so I came to Bonchaz for their signature bun. To my disappointment, they didn’t have Original $1.50 or Chocolate Truffle $1.75 so I tried the Apple Cinnamon $1.75 which is only available at this location. I’m not sure why it was discounted, as it was still 5:30pm, so not closing time yet (7pm). I did see him later bake some more, so maybe he was trying to get rid of the old batch.

idearabbit_bonchaz_main3I got it for 99 cents (not sure why it isn’t a dollar considering we don’t have the penny anymore). Either way, it was a nice deal. The bun came a bit squashed, but it was fluffy and chewy with a filling inside. It wasn’t overly sweet, and I could have had another…mmmmm….dangerous! lol

idearabbit_bonchaz_main4I sat by the counter, watching the staff make fresh buns. Mmmmm… they looked good, but unfortunately, they wont be ready before I need to go to class. The speakers were a bit too loud, making it very difficult to hear Sheepie on the phone.

I’ll be back again when I have my next yoga class. Hopefully, they’ll have the Original or Chocolate left, or better yet, a new batched baked up!

Second Time

Yes! They indeed have the two I wanted to try the first time. Again, it was discounted so the two only costed me $1.70. Bargain!  idearabbit_bonchaz_main2The Chocolate Truffle is really hard to eat as the chocolate sprinkle falls off like crazy. Still, the chewy bun and a nice soft chocolate in the middle is delicious. idearabbit_bonchaz_Main1

The Original has sugar and butter…not good for my cavity-prone teeth…lol. But really good! I would have to say these two are my favourite.

As my yoga classes continue till mid April, I’ll be back twice a week! Oh oh! Lol.

Since coming back again and again, the service varies depending on who’s working behind the counter.

Trees Organic in Gastown

Trees Organic Coffee Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoAfter dining at Taishoken, the 5 of us walked to Gastown for dessert and to meet up with one more friend. We arrived at Trees Organic in a location which I never knew it existed before. I have walked by it so many times, and never noticed.

With the heavy ramen broth, I was not interested in any more food, so I just had a Rooibos tea $2.40 instead. I also told them, the cakes were really sweet, and I could barely finish half. My friend ordered the Blueberry cheesecake $7/slice. Everyone loved it, and wondered why I would say it was super sweet. I did like it, but then again, we were only taking small bites, sharing a slice. I think it would be different if each of us had one.

idearabbit_treesorganic_gastown1The staff seemed to be Japanese, and the service was pretty good. The man who seemed to be the owner even brought in a small table with 2 chairs for us, though we ended up on the counter instead, and finally moving to the bigger table later on. The cafe is quite small, and I think they try to cram in too many tables and chairs… You are practically brushing each others’ chairs.

idearabbit_treesorganic_gastown2The owner brought our drinks to our table, and when we were about to leave, I still had most of the tea, so I asked for a to go cup, and he happily transferred it into a cup.

To get to the bathroom is a bit of a mystery at first. The cafe is inside a mini mall (if I can even call it that). We went into the stairwell, and found that whether we went up or down, there was a gate. We got back onto the floor with the cafe, and tried the elevator down. We came upon an area that looked a bit familiar. Hey! I know this bathroom! I went here when I dined at Al Porte! …so that was interesting.

O’ Mio Gelato

O' Mio Gelato Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoWhen we arrived, the place was empty. The owner was a super friendly and chatty Italian who said he came to Canada when he was very little. All the gelato are made homemade and he allows to try samples of the ones you’re interested in.
$4 for 1 scoop, though it’s actually two small scoops, and $7 for 2 scoops. 1 scoop was plenty! You have a choice of cone or cup – both the same price. I had the espresso chocolate flake in a cup and my friend had Vanilla salted caramel in a cone.

idearabbit-omiogelato idearabbit-omiogelato2 idearabbit-omiogelato3 idearabbit-omiogelato5 idearabbit-omiogelato6We sat outside on the patio while a father with 2 kids dropped by, then a mother with his son came by. So not busy, but there seems to be a few customers here and there.

idearabbit-omiogelato4As we chatted away, we noticed the next door was a salon shop. The sign said they did ‘feather hair extensions’ and wondered what those were. We were surprised to see the man from the gelato shop go into the closed salon. We then asked if he also owned the salon and started chatting about feather hair extensions.
The gelato doesn’t have a huge selection, but while you’re there, you do feel a sense of community and down-to-earthness, despite not having that many customers. It’s open till 9pm which is incredibly late considering it’s not in downtown, and there aren’t that many traffic in the area.
Go check it out!
