Granville Island Gelato and Coffee House

GI Gelato & Coffee House on UrbanspoonAfter coming back from a vacation in Italy, and eating a lot of real authentic gelato, I was craving for some while we were at Granville Island.

The place had a line up, and I decided to get a coconut gelato.

  • small was $3.95
  • medium $5.57
  • large $6.62
  • plus in a waffle costs an extra 50 cents!

idearabbit-granvillegelato4idearabbit-granvillegelato1 idearabbit-granvillegelato3 idearabbit-granvillegelato2I got the small in a cone for $4.45. It was expensive after paying only €1.10 to €2 ($1.70 – $3 CDN) for an authentic one in Italy. It was good indeed, but pricey. But I guess that’s because I’m comparing it to Italy and not in Vancouver.

Mimi Buloveme

Mimibuloveme Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato A very small cafe, but popular for desserts that I’ve been wanting to try for a while. It was already 8:45pm on a Friday night, but it was almost full, with people coming in for take out. The music was a bit loud (why do cafes and restaurants blast their music?) It’s something I’ve become really annoyed with since I not only go out to eat, but to converse with people.

idearabbit-mimibuloveme idearabbit-mimibuloveme2The actual physical menu is quite disappointing. It’s a 8.5″x11″ white sheet printed with your normal desktop laser printer. With use, it’s become crumpled and terrible. idearabbit-mimibuloveme3 idearabbit-mimibuloveme4 idearabbit-mimibuloveme5 idearabbit-mimibuloveme6 idearabbit-mimibuloveme9The decor is very simple, but clean. They have this gadget at the cashier where when you push a button on what looks like a box usually for oranges (only mini in size), a mechanical cat meows and pulls its paws out. Very cute, lol.

idearabbit-mimibuloveme8I ordered the Matcha Waffle $6.50 with Matcha gelato, mochi ball, gyumi, red beans, white chocolate matcha sauce, whip crean and raspberry. Mmmmmmmm!!! I love this! I think it’s fair price, and the portion is great. Nice presentation. Thumbs up!

idearabbit-mimibuloveme7Sheepie ordered the Hedgehog Parfait $7.50 with Hedgehog gelato, chocolate cake, marshmallows and whip cream. Again, very nice portions.

The interior could use a bit more character to it…well literally too…they could use more of the cat character throughout – like on the menu. I’m not sure why the cafe has the word ‘Bubble House’. The place certainly does have a bubble place feel to it. But to not put up their name is kind of weird. It’s easy to miss if it’s your first time going there, or worse, if you don’t know about it, you may never enter because you think it’s a bubble teahouse.

But despite that, they seem to be doing well. By the time we were getting ready to leave, there was a couple waiting for a table to open. Would love to come back again for more waffle desserts! :)

La Casa Gelato

La Casa Gelato on Urbanspoon
This very popular gelato place sits on the corner of Venables and Glen Dr. covered in pink paint with the three Italian colours of green, white and red on the roof. Amazingly, they now have 518 different flavours, though only 218 are on site at a time. It’s always packed, with a lot of kids. However, I’ve only gone during the summer season, so I wonder how the business is during winter time.

idearabbit-lacasagelato1 idearabbit-lacasagelato2 idearabbit-lacasagelato3 idearabbit-lacasagelato4The great thing is that you get to try the flavours. It’s one small scoop on a tiny spoon, but it’s enough for you to taste the flavour. You’ll see everything from chocolate, brandy, fruits, wasabi, lychee and so on.

This time, I tried:

  • Avocado: it’s very faint. The taste of the avocado doesn’t appear until the ice cream has pretty much melted in your mouth and leaves that ‘avocado’ taste. But it’s subtle. Very interesting.
  • Coconut: nice! It’s got frozen coconut chunks and the ice cream is very creamy and flavourful. I quite like it.
  • Bailey Chocolate Cheesecake: a hint of alcohol. The three flavours mix well together.

Ice cream here is a bit on the pricier side. It’s $5 a scoop or $7 for two, and you can have it either in a cup or cone.
This is a must go to for the summer season, especially if you love gelato! You’ll never run out of flavours to try…at least for a while…:P

Another time I went, it was around 9pm, but it was jam packed again!

I tried:

  • Chai Tea which one guy (stranger) said to me that it was really good. I tried it, but wasn’t wow-ed as he put it. To me it didn’t seem like chai flavour.
  • Nerds: wow…so purple!! It tasted really chemically and infused with lots of artificial flavour. It was like tasting really bad kid’s gum. Blah.
  • German Chocolate cake: very rich – if you like chocolate, give this a try!

idearabbit-lacasagelato5 idearabbit-lacasagelato6I ended up getting the Peach Plum and Jasmine Tea. Both were subtle and complimented each other. The 2 scoops were a good portion and we enjoyed the sitting on the stone benches in the parklet across the street with the Xmas lights dangling from the trees (even though it’s summer).
