We decided to do an easy hike since I have hip and knee problems. As you can see with the info above from Vancouver Trails, it’s a fairly easy hike. Because we were taking pictures here and there, took some alternate routes, rested, we were out there for 2.5 hours.

There is free parking at this location, and don’t be surprised if you find that you’re not the only one  especially during the summer season! There’s lots of hiker (or casual walkers), those that come to dip in the creek, and tourists that are wearing clothing and footwear not suitable for this walk. There is a trail, but it’s not paved or anything, so don’t come in shoes with heels!

To start off the trail, we cross the suspension bridge. If you don’t want to pay the ridiculous $35 for the Capilano suspension bridge, then go to this bridge. Perhaps it’s not as big, but still, you get the idea for absolutely free. Be prepared to stall at the bridge as many cling onto the bridge as if they’re going to fall off.

Everyone taking a dip in the cool waters during a hot summer day

At the creek where it’s deep, there’s a huge crowd of people as if it’s like some summer resort. People are in their bathing suits, jumping from the rocky cliffs into the water. It’s clean, but not the place you want to go if you’re looking to dip in a more natural, quiet surrounding – ie. without so many people and touristy people taking photos of you.

The trail branches off to Rice Lake, and so we walked around the entire lake (mostly flat trail). Coming from growing up near the Rockies, this lake is nothing spectacular, but nice to know that you can get to a place like this so close to the city. There was a family that was fishing. I didn’t see them catch anything, but I did see a dead fish floating near the shore…hopefully, it was a natural death, and not because the water is becoming contaminated…o_O

There is no swimming or boating allowed at this lake.

By the time I got to the lake, my hip and knees were acting up. The trail back, although easy was uncomfortable, and awkward to walk through. The stairs at several points in the trail were killers, but I just went really slow. I couldn’t sleep well that night because of the swelling and dull ache…

Overall, it was a good hike. Would have liked it a bit less crowded at the creek area.

Burgoo – Food for Comfort

Burgoo Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoI had always wanted to try out this place cuz several of my friends had mentioned it was really good. There are several locations, but I went to the one in North Vancouver. (3 Lonsdale Ave. right by the Lonsdale Quay Market + Seabus Terminal)

We got there around 6:30pm, on a very cold and rainy day. Still, there was a lineup inside. We were greeted by a friendly host and we waited for about 10 minutes. I thought it would take longer, so I was a bit surprised that we got in so quickly.

I ordered the Hungarian Beef Goulash (Hungarian dish – beef simmered in paprika caraway gravy with rutabaga, cabbage and homemade potato dumplings) $18 and my friend ordered the Macaroni & More, ( USA dish – chock full of aged white Cheddar, onion, thyme, bacon and peas, baked with seasoned breadcrumbs) $15

Despite being very busy, the food came fairly fast too. They both came on a wooden square board and smelled really delicious. The look wasn’t much, and it seemed small, but it was more than sufficient. I couldn’t almost finish it. Both dishes were really good. The spices and flavour was rich. Since my sauce was so rich like gravy, I almost wanted some rice with it…

It is definitely out of my normal price range, but it was nice to try something different. Great atmosphere, and although the sever brought out the wrong size of the salad my friend ordered, she quickly fixed it. She also brought out the wrong bill, but she fixed that as well.

When we got up to leave, there were still many people waiting in the entrance. I can see why. Because of the price, I’m not sure if I’ll be going back that often – but I’d certainly recommend it to everyone :)

IDEA: Illustration and Design- Elements and Applications

The IDEA program is where I (IDEA Rabbit) was born :)

It’s a very intensive, three year diploma program at Capilano University in North Vancouver, BC. The first year is focused on traditional mediums, great for those who are illustrators, using acrylic, watercolours, gouache, oil, etc. Second year is getting introduced to digital stuff. You get a digital camera, a new imac computer with all the software needed, plus a wacom tablet! These are all included in the tuition, which isn’t that much different from UofC tuition (roughly $2800-3300 per semester).
In your final third year, it’s all about preparing your portfolio and grad show!!

The teachers are all professionals who work in the industry. You might have seen my earlier posts, but founders of Hangar 18 both work as teachers. St. Bernadine, Elevator Strategy, Wasserman + Partners and Advertising, and so on. There are also illustrators like Si Huynh and Ben Tour that teaches too. The program also has a lot of connection with the local design firms which is great to get your foot in the door! Get lots of exposure.

Check out their official site at http://www2.capilanou.ca/programs/idea.html

You can also check out our grad page and see what kind of designers and illustrators are born after three years!
