Hungry Guys Kitchen

Hungry Guys Kitchen Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoThank goodness for Hungry Guys Kitchen! They are simply the best salad place in town! I’m surprised by the low ratings on Zomato.

This place has a line up during lunchtime, so go a bit early, or have a late lunch as it seems like many of the office workers go here for a healthy lunch.

I always get the custom salad which comes out to $6.82 (incl tax), and the portion is really generous! It’s the cheapest salad for the quality and quantity compared to anywhere else I know. I’ve never had to pick up brown leaves or veggies that looked sketchy which I’ve come across with Subway or Tim Horton’s salads.

You get to choose 2 bases:

  • organic mixed greens
  • chopped romaine
  • baby spinach
  • shredded kale
  • organic arugula
  • white rice
  • brown rice
  • organic quinoa

I always get kale and quinoa.

Then 4 toppings;

  • local red beets
  • shredded carrots
  • onions
  • cucumber
  • fresh basil
  • red peppers
  • tomato
  • fresh cilantro
  • edamame
  • chickpeas
  • local apples
  • dried cranberries
  • tortilla chips
  • roasted broccoli
  • fresh mint
  • pumpkin seeds
  • sunflower seeds
  • red cabbage
EXTRAS
  • bacon [add $1.3o]
  • shredded cheddar [add $1.30]
  • blue cheese [add $1.30]
  • hard boiled egg [add $1.30]
  • goat cheese [add $1.30]
  • avocado [add $1.3o]
DRESSINGS
  • HGK dressing
  • maple balsamic dressing
  • miso + sesame dressing
  • red wine vinegar
  • blue cheese dressing
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • lemon basil

I usually get carrots, red beets, roasted broccoli and zucchini. I don’t get the proteins, and just put in my own tuna from a can, or chopped up ham. I also have a bag of dried cranberries (much cheaper). Last but not least, the dressing. I’ve tried their HGK dressing and lemon basil.

They also are focused on getting local, sustainable, free-run, responsibly raised, free of GMO, free of – artificial flavorings, colors, sweeteners, trans fat, preservatives – ingredients. Their bowls and utensils are biodegrable too. The interior of the restaurant is pretty cool too. Lots of greens and open. Good food, good role models for the food industry and good prices. Two thumbs up.

Tio Pepe

Tio Pepe's Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - ZomatoWe were walking up and down for a place to grab a bite when we came upon this place. The sandwich board promoting their Burrito Special $9.95 which included a large burrito, salad and pop drew us in.

When we walked in, there was nobody inside except for what seemed like the manager. Sheepie asked if the restaurant was even open as all the lights were off, and it was a bit dark, despite sunlight coming in from the window. The fans mounted on the walls weren’t on, so the place was pretty warm. For Sheepie, he was dying from the heat.

idearabbit_tiopepe2The table’s surface had tiles, and there was a small bouque of flowers in a bottle.

idearabbit_tiopepe3He ordered the Burrito Special, and I ordered the Chips and Guacamole $4.95. The chips were super crispy, and the guacamole seemed fresh. Sheepie commented that neither was salted, but that was perfectly fine with me. Less sodium!

idearabbit_tiopepe4Sheepie got his wish for more salt. The burrito was extremely salty. The sauce on the top was pretty much red, ketchupy salt on top. Sheepie scraped that off. One end of the burrito where he started which had cheese and beans were salty. When I had a few bites from the other end, it just had dry tasteless chicken. I could say it’s one of the worst burrito we’ve tried. Might as well go for Taco Time instead for better and cheaper burritos.

idearabbit_tiopepe5 The salad had a lot of chopped up leaf that were brown (some even black) on the edges. Blah.

Can’t go wrong with the diet coke…came from a can.

Service was ok.

Not sure if us sitting at the table by the window draw more customers in, but by the end of our meal, there were about 3 other tables occupied.

Will I return? Likely not.

La Tortilleria

La Tortilleria Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato On a Sunday afternoon, Sheepie and I went to Granville Island for a short visit. We decided to grab and bite and came upon La Tortilleria. Their menu boards were updated and replaced the chalkboards with a printed menu.

I wanted the crispy bowl of chicken and beans, but Sheepie wanted a burrito, so we had that instead. There was a ‘mock-up’ of the dish, and the first thing that Sheepie said when our dish was served was ‘hey, that looks much smaller than the what they had.’

idearabbit_latortilleria1 idearabbit_latortilleria3 idearabbit_latortilleria2The Chicken Burrito $9: It looked pretty good, but there wasn’t much of a flavour to grasp. It was all very mellow, except for a very small hint of cilantro in the salsa. There were a lot of ‘water’ and the sauce was diluted, and the burrito was sitting in a puddle getting soaked. The price is high for what you get, though I understand it’s Granville Island.
