Urban Sushi

Urban Grill & Urban Sushi on UrbanspoonI used to come for lunch all the time when I worked right next door. I really liked their Negitoro roll, but that was over 8 years ago.
I decided to gather my friends for lunch at Urban Sushi to see how it was now. It had been renovated and had a modern, clean look. They had integrated the other – Urban Grill restaurant together with Urban Sushi.

The tables and seating were a bit crammed, and with coats and bags especially during winter times, we didn’t have any place to put them. I kept my coat on, while another bunched it up on her lap.
Service was very friendly, and the menu was quite extensive for such a small restaurant.

idearabbit-urbansushi idearabbit-urbansushi2I, of course ordered the Negitoro Roll $2.95 and Pork Gyoza $5.25. The Negitoro had changed since 8 years ago. Before it used to be a ‘roll’, as in the rice was on the outside. Now it was a ‘maki’, with the rice wrapped inside the seaweed. I didn’t mind either one, though I find rolls are bigger. The big question was – how was the taste? The flavour was really good. I’m not sure what they add in that gives it a wonderful flavour. However, I was a bit disgusted that the rice and fish was warm…eek…

The gyoza was ok. Nothing fancy. The bento boxes that two of my friends ordered looked good, and the Beef Udon one other friend ordered looked ok – not authentic Japanese bowl, but she said it’s really good.

For a quick bite or take out, I wouldn’t mind returning again…though not sure about the Negitoro.

Saboten at Aberdeen Mall

Saboten 勝博殿 on UrbanspoonLocated in the food court amongst many other restaurants, we decided to try out Saboten. I was immediately drawn into the plastic models that showed each menu set, compared to the not-so appealing photos of food that other restaurants were showcasing. Ahh…love the plastic menus…makes me feel like I’m back in Japan…

idearabbit-saboten idearabbit-saboten2Anyways, I decided to get the #10 Loin Katsu Curry $8.25. The deep fried pork cutlet was very crispy and the curry was really good. Ah, also reminds me of Japan… It was quite filling. Miso was authentic, though a bit salty for me and no huge tofu or negi pieces like the ones in the plastic model. But nice addition of pickles which goes well with the rice.

idearabbit-saboten4Sheepie had the #4 Saboten set $8.95 where there was tartar sauce – which I think is added for Westerners…and indeed, Sheepie liked it more than the traditional sauce. He complimented that the miso soup was good, and he rarely says that – so it must be a good thing :)

I was very surprised at the very poor rating on Urbanspoon. The service was ok, the timing was alright, prices were fair and the food was pretty decent for a food court.

Would dine here again if we were going to eat at the food court in Aberdeen mall.

McDonald’s at Brentwood Mall

McDonald's on UrbanspoonYes, I avoided going to any fast food restaurants for several years, but Sheepie likes going there, so now I have the bug – only a little tiny one though. I only resort when I’m very low on fuel and don’t want to spend that much. I’m severely underweight, so a lot of calories is good news to me – but maybe not the cholesterol and all that – but, I rarely go. Again – it’s for my last resort.
And how can you go wrong with a burger for $1.39 (+taxes). Although comparing to Burger King’s Junior Chicken which is also the same price, I prefer BK. The BK chicken is juicier and thicker. The lettuce seems to be fresh and overall the burger tastes better.

The location at Brentwood is right by one of the entrances. The service is quick, and the interior is ok. However, due to the developments of the condos at the mall, this McDonald’s has closed down this year. However, you can always order the Junior Chicken at another location.
