Suri’s Flavors – CLOSED

Suri's Flavors on Urbanspoon*Updated: as of April 2014, this place has closed down :(

A fairly new (opened April 2012) Indian ‘fast food’ place that’s more catered to take out customers. Located inside a convenience shop called Urban Choice Market, it’s a bit of an odd setting, but thought I’d try it out. I was out front looking at the banner that showcased their best deals. An Indian man was sitting on one of those plastic chairs out in front reading a newspaper. As soon as he saw that I seemed interested, he started to chat with me.

As I walked inside behind him, apparently his ‘regular’ customer walked in, and so she was served first as I looked more at their menu. It was nice to have photos for each dish, as I wouldn’t be able to tell what was what if they only the the names listed. Prices seemed reasonable.

Another ‘regular’ customer came in and we were talking about how he always comes here. I told him it was my first time trying out the place and he suggested the curry with rice for $6. I was convinced right away, as that was what I was thinking of trying. I ordered the butter chicken with rice. The friendly Indian gentleman, put a bit of curry at the bottom of the container first. Then rice, then more curry on top. Ah~ good thinking. All the other places usually puts the curry on top, leaving the bottom portion of the rice with no curry. Of course you can always mix it up, but I tend to like the rice and curry a bit separated until they are in my mouth.

Lastly, he sprinkled some cilantro on top. Mmm! I love cilantro! Adds such a nice flavour to it. The service was great. I really like the man, and although it was odd to see a kitchen in a convenience store, it seemed well kept – well, it was pretty new after all. Hopefully, it will be kept clean. I thought the container was a bit small, but it was pretty filling. The curry was excellent, and a spicier than Crave India. It had green peas in it, which I don’t recall seeing in other Indian restaurants. I love peas, so it was good. I would definitely go back! I think it might be my favourite fast food Indian place now! :D

Tim Hortons on Davie

Tim Hortons on UrbanspoonOpen 24 hours a day, this Timmy’s is always got customers going in and out, getting their Ice Cap or box of timbits. The service at this location is pretty good. They are usually friendly (depending who serves you) and food is usually standard and comes out fairly quickly. On most mornings, the line up will go out the door…so give yourself plenty of time if you’re in a hurry for your breakfast before work.

I do find the AC to be way too cold – but that’s just me…I’m always freezing…lol
Unfortunately, because of the location, you will have lots of homeless people inside, whether eating or harassing customers for change. During the day time, it’s a bit better, but I’m being soft I think, considering that other cities I’ve been to or lived had never had this kind of scene – but that’s another problem that has to do with Vancouver, not with Timmy’s, although I wish they were a bit more active in dealing with this problem.

At night, you can pretty much have over half the customers be homeless people. At the entrance you will have beggers, I’ve seen one guy throw up on the door, many that come in to use the bathroom, wander around the restaurant, many asking for change, or to even use your phone. Growing up in Calgary, I never encountered a Timmy’s like this, nor any coffee shops like it – especially when it’s suppose to be family-oriented. If I had kids, I wouldn’t want to sit around and wont be able to relax. I do tend to keep my eye on my belongings a lot more when I’m there.

Back to the food, the drinks. I used to love the Ice Cap and had it all the time. After I went through the strict health diet a few years back, and although I’m now back on a normal diet (but not unhealthy like before), I find Timmy’s drinks to be way too sweet. I like how you can customize your drinks at coffee shops like Blenz. But I guess you’re also paying for that too. There are usually promotions for many drinks at $1 which is one reason my friend likes going there, so I end up there too. They have a ridiculous number of sizes to choose from.

I no longer eat that much sweets, and never been a huge donut fan (never have been a bread fan) so no more timbits for me…

I do like their sandwiches. I usually order the Chicken salad sandwich with chicken strips, onions, celery, pimentos, mixed with mayo and black pepper, lettuce and tomato. Freshly made for $3.29 it’s a pretty good deal. I like mine toasted.

Baguette & Co.

Baguette & Co on UrbanspoonMy friend had discovered a cafe on Davie, so we tried out for desserts after dining out Gurkha.

I tried the 3 mini pastries for $4, while my friend got the Triple Chocolate cake piece.

My mini pastries were flan, whipped cream puff, and the mini version of the triple chocolate. All of them of really good! None were sweet and sugary like many North American cakes. The Flan was probably my favourite. A hint of vanilla. Very simple, but delicious. They were all very fresh and super soft – just the way I like them!

The staff were really friendly, patient with me trying to choose the 3 items. The cashier guy and my friend starting chatting up about cell phones, as the cashier mentioned he had just gotten his hands on his first smartphone after he saw me taking photos of the cafe with my smartphone.

Cutlery is hung in a container on the wall, along with glasses for cold water – all self serve.
It’s a cute cafe, wish they had a better name than Baguette & Co…I think I never went in cuz it just seemed like they only had sandwiches…and adding the ‘& Co’ just comes off as cold and almost corporate like…(not to be confused with Corp., but still)

2nd Time

idearabbit-baguetteco10The Latte is small and really strong on the espresso side. Sheepie has complimented that the cafe smells like roasted coco bean and was almost like authentic coffee like in Europe. I did enjoy it, but I am super sensitive to caffeine, and although I only had some sips, I couldn’t sleep till 6am that night…

We’ve been back again since then, and the pastries are always consistently good. Good service too.

Anyways, glad to have discovered this place! I’d definitely want to check out the one on Broadway!
